Advancements in Cardiac Treatment: MHH's Deployment of Self-Dissolving Stents

Unlike permanent metal stents, the new generation of stents, such as the Freesolve model made primarily from magnesium, naturally dissolve within the body over approximately twelve months. These stents not only support the coronary arteries to prevent closure but also release a drug that promotes healing of the vessel wall, thereby reducing the risk of re-narrowing.

Dr. L. Christian Napp, Managing Senior Physician and Head of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at MHH, emphasized the benefits of these bioresorbable stents. They are particularly advantageous for younger patients due to their ability to maintain the natural function of the artery, including vessel wall mobility. Kubilay C., the first patient to receive this innovative stent at MHH, shared his positive experience. Despite a hereditary predisposition to arteriosclerosis, the new stent has allowed him to live a more active lifestyle without the discomfort and risks associated with his condition.
