Diagnostics moves closer to treatment pathways

Diagnostics is shifting closer to where clinical decisions are made. Instead of functioning as isolated laboratory procedures, new technologies are being embedded directly into treatment pathways, supporting clinicians during follow-up care, frontline examinations, and surgical interventions.

Recent developments in biomarker analysis, sensor technology, and handheld diagnostic systems illustrate how diagnostic information can be delivered faster and closer to the point of treatment. Thus, workflow integration is becoming a key factor in precision diagnostics.

One area where this integration becomes visible is cancer follow-up care. Researchers at Lund University and Skåne University Hospital in Sweden developed a blood test that detected breast cancer relapse a median of nearly 14 months before metastases became clinically visible.

The approach analyzes circulating tumor DNA in blood samples collected during chemotherapy, after surgery, and throughout follow-up care. This creates a continuous monitoring process instead of relying solely on periodic imaging exams.

For oncology teams, the workflow advantage lies in earlier identification of high-risk patients and more targeted treatment adjustments during follow-up care. The researchers also see potential to reduce overtreatment in patients without detectable relapse signals.

While blood diagnostics target longitudinal monitoring, another project focuses on immediate assessment during examination. A research team at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) in Canada developed a temporary "smart tattoo" designed to detect early-stage melanoma through thermal skin analysis.

The system combines microneedles, nanoparticles, and ultrafast imaging to identify minimal temperature changes associated with tumor activity. According to the researchers, the method detected micro-melanomas within four days, before lesions became visible with conventional imaging techniques.

The technology is designed to fit directly into dermatological examination workflows and could help clinicians prioritize suspicious lesions earlier while reducing unnecessary biopsies.

The same push toward workflow integration is now reaching surgical oncology. Researchers from the University of Adelaide and the University of Queensland in Australia introduced a wireless handheld probe for intraoperative tumor margin assessment during breast-conserving surgery.

The device evaluates mechanical differences between healthy and cancerous tissue in real time during tumor removal. Surgeons receive immediate feedback while operating, which may support more precise excision of malignant tissue.

The clinical relevance lies in workflow integration inside the operating room. More accurate margin assessment during surgery could reduce repeat procedures and support more efficient surgical planning.

Together the projects highlight how diagnostic tools are becoming embedded components of clinical processes rather than standalone laboratory procedures. Blood-based monitoring supports long-term therapy management, sensor systems assist point-of-care examinations, and handheld probes provide intraoperative decision support.
