Cell therapies on track for more targeted clinical applications

Cell-based therapies are among the most promising developments in modern medicine. At the same time, they face the challenge of making complex biological processes controllable and ensuring their long-term efficacy. Current research approaches address precisely these issues: they improve our understanding of cell behavior, optimize therapeutic properties, and open up new fields of application.

Current research projects from a variety of institutions address these challenges from different perspectives – ranging from the analysis of living cells and improved cell types to targeted applications for various diseases.

A key requirement for the further development of cell therapies is a better understanding of the underlying biological processes. To this end, a team at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has developed a method that allows genetic activity in living cells to be analyzed repeatedly over extended periods of time without destroying the cells.

This allows dynamic changes to be continuously observed for the first time. The method provides a foundation for understanding cell behavior more precisely and influencing its behavior in a more targeted manner. For the development of future therapies, this translates into a better understanding of processes and more informed optimization.

At the same time, attention is turning to the quality of the cells used. Researchers at the Leibniz Institute for Immunotherapy are working on CAR-T cells with stem cell-like properties that can self-renew and remain active in the body for extended periods.

Initial results suggest that these cell types could be effective even at low doses and might reduce the need for preparatory chemotherapy to support the treatment. The goal is to make cell therapies more effective and, simultaneously, easier to tolerate, thereby enabling their broader use.

In addition to optimizing existing approaches, new areas of application are also being explored. As part of a funded research project, the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) is developing a targeted CAAR-T cell therapy for neurological autoimmune diseases.

The goal is to specifically target disease-causing immune cells without suppressing the entire immune system. This approach aims to reduce side effects and make therapies more precise. It also has the potential to expand the range of applications for cell therapy beyond oncology.

These examples demonstrate that cell therapies are advancing simultaneously in several areas. New methods for analyzing living cells, improved properties of therapeutic cell types, and targeted approaches for new indications are helping to lay the groundwork for broader clinical application.

The added value lies in the fact that treatments could become more targeted and, in the long term, more stable and easier to control. Even though many of these approaches are still the subject of research, they demonstrate how the foundations for future clinical applications are continuously evolving.
