Diseases of the cardiovascular system are among the most common causes of death in industrialized nations. An important indicator of this is hypertension, which can currently still be diagnosed and monitored by means of regular mechanical pressure measurements using an upper arm cuff. This unpleasant method restricts the patient in everyday life and also provides only comparatively few, punctual measured values. This situation can be remedied by an optical sensor that is integrated into an earmould and can evaluate the blood pressure changes of each individual heartbeat. In addition to other important parameters such as heart rate, heart rate variability and blood oxygen saturation, the CiS Research Institute has now also succeeded in developing solid algorithms for evaluating blood pressure changes. The patented method is based solely on the data of the optical in-ear sensor and thus offers a possibility for monitoring important vital parameters that is suitable for everyday use.

The CiS Research Institute develops and manufactures silicon sensors for numerous fields of application. Together with industrial partners from the hearing aid industry, universal and individual earmoulds with integrated optical sensor assembly have been developed. The hearing ability is not restricted and a high wearing comfort is achieved. CiS offers the production of such prototypes up to small series as well as development and transfer services for the integration of the sensor assembly into customer-specific medical products and applications.

Modern and accurate gas sensors are based on the NDIR measurement concept, which requires a broadband infrared light source to evaluate the gas-specific light absorption in the IR. The transition from classical filaments to micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) solutions offers a number of advantages. On the one hand, MEMS solutions are significantly smaller and more shock resistant, which simplifies the optical and mechanical integration into the sensor system. Secondly, these IR sources consume significantly less power and are much faster in switching on and off - an important aspect for sensors with good signal-to-noise behavior. This makes MEMS IR emitters the tool of choice for both mobile sensor solutions and stationary applications with high requirements, such as in breath gas analysis, process measurement technology or environmental monitoring.

In addition to different component sizes and performance classes, we offer innovative solutions for emitters with increased dynamics, improved emission properties and long lifetime in use. Furthermore, we offer various solutions for infrared detectors, services for assembly and connection technology, hermetization as well as integration into the sensor systems of our customers and development partners.
