Microfluidics in glass and in 3D - as prototype and in series production

We use SLE technology to produce microchannels in quartz glass for you. The advantages of this material are good optical transparency, biological compatibility and chemical and thermal resistance. This makes it possible to clean the manufactured structures by means of autoclaving or even pyrolysis.

Processes such as gluing or bonding are not necessary, as SLE technology produces three-dimensional structures directly in the glass. This protects the cells from disturbing influences by adhesives and ensures a long-lasting durability of your biochip.

We produce prototypes and series of your biochip directly from your CAD data. We are happy to support you in the creation of 3D-CAD models according to your wishes.

For mass production of your biochip design, we can help you integrate our high-speed microscanner into your production line. To further reduce costs, we perform process development with low-cost flat glasses and optimize our microscanner for your chip design for throughput.

Mounted micromechanics and holes in glass

With the SLE technology we produce micro holes and micromechanical components in quartz glass. Advantages of this material are for example optical transparency, chemical and mechanical resistance of the material

It is not necessary to assemble the microstructured components because SLE technology is used to produce three-dimensional structures directly in the glass. For example, we produce a rotatable gear wheel already mounted on its axis (picture below).

With a component height of 2 mm, we achieve a precision of 2 µm, minimum gap widths of about 10 µm and gap heights of 20 µm and a conicity of no more than 20 µm. The roughness of the walls is about 1 µm Rz.

We produce prototypes and series of your glass component directly from your CAD data. We are happy to support you in the creation of 3D CAD models according to your requirements.

For the mass production of your glass component, we support you in integrating our modular high-speed microscanner with current high-power ultrashort pulse lasers into your production line

We offer to optimize our microscanners for your product for throughput and to support you in process development for new materials.

3D printer for transparent microcomponents

The LightFab 3D Printer is specially designed for subtractive 3D printing of precision glass parts using the SLE process and is also used for this purpose in our contract manufacturing

The LightFab 3D Printer is suitable for prototyping and mass production and is unique due to the combination of 3D micro scanner (many micro vectors are written quickly) with precise 3-axis system (Scientific Version:120 x 80 x 20 mm, Manufacturing Version: 200 x 200 x 150 mm). The flexible UKP laser with adjustable pulse duration allows optimal processing of different materials. The CAD software with our "3D printer driver" and the machine software ensure automated and fast 3D printing of complex models. Our many years of experience have gone into the complete system in accordance with the Machinery Directive with vibration isolation and laser safety (in accordance with EN 60825-1:2014).

The LightFab 3D Printer is used for the SLE process and also for other laser processes with <2 micron focus, e.g. very fine laser ablation of hard-brittle materials, writing 3D waveguides inside glasses and also additive 3D printing with 2-photon polymerization.

For the application of all these processes the flexibility of the used UKP laser and our CAM software are very useful. We work together with partners who use our machines for these technologies to enable you to get started with new technologies as well.

Because the SLE process is very scalable, we have developed various high-speed modules for UKP lasers of large power, from which we can build a special machine for mass production especially of your glass component.

LightFab: Fabrication with laser light

LightFab GmbH is a young technology company in the field of laser technology. We started LightFab in 2013 and developed the basics of our technologies at the Chair of Laser Technology of RWTH Aachen University in the house of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Aachen.

We produce microstructured glass components with UKP laser radiation as well as the microscanner suitable for their productive production - the "LightFab". Many years of experience of the founders (Dipl.-Phys. Martin Hermans, Dipl. Ing. Jürgen Ortmann and Dr. rer.nat. Jens Gottmann) with the ISLE process, in the development and use of the microscanners as well as the unique experience in software development for scanner and system control are the basis for our innovative products.

Our goal is to bring the processing of transparent materials with high power UKP lasers to a wide range of applications. LightFab - 3D production with light.
