Medical technology: that is high-tech, economic power and top performance for patients and users.

The smallest and most modern instruments enable operations that leave hardly any scars. Flexible and lightweight prostheses give disabled people a new quality of life. Above all, medical technology from Germany is innovative and thus a technological leader.

The SPECTARIS Medical Technology Association represents around 150 German companies in the capital goods and medical aids sector that primarily manufacture high-tech products and are strongly export-oriented. The members cover an extensive field of research and application, which in a broader sense can be classified as "life sciences". The trade association offers its members targeted services, a platform for networking and represents the interests of its members vis-à-vis politicians and the public, so that the framework conditions for innovation and growth continue to improve. In particular, dealing with the complex regulatory requirements in the healthcare sector is the subject of numerous working groups of the association.

Together for ethics in care

A large proportion of the 2.6 million people currently in need of nursing care will be dependent on a nursing care bed sooner or later. In this context, the bed becomes the focal point of nursing care. It forms the basis of what is often the last personal living space of the person in need of care and at the same time enables care to be provided in accordance with current professional standards.

The SPECTARIS specialist group for nursing and hospital beds has drawn up a voluntary declaration on the consideration of ethical aspects in the development of nursing beds. The new declaration is based on the existing Care Charter, which sets out the rights of people in need of help and care in eight articles. Quality features, goals and rights of people in need of nursing care are formulated there, the fulfilment of which is an absolute requirement in the sense of good nursing and care.

"We want to show how manufacturers of care beds can implement the ethical specifications from the Care Charter in the functionalities of a care bed for the benefit of both those in need of care as well as care staff and caring relatives," explains Ralf Wiedemann, member of the medical technology board at SPECTARIS and chairman of the specialist group. In addition to taking care-related aspects into account, the signatory manufacturers also undertake, for example, to observe environmental protection in production. "Against this background, from an ethical and moral point of view, there is an obligation not to bring a nursing bed onto the market with only minimal equipment and quality due to short-term economic considerations," says Wiedemann.

The initiative is flanked by a new seal "Together for Ethics in Care", which certifies that the manufacturers comply with the specifications from the declaration of voluntary commitment. The initiative is also supported by the German Nursing Association (DPV). Rolf Höfert, Managing Director of the DPV: "We gratefully welcome the commitment and look forward to a
patient-centered realization in manufacturing, for the benefit of all involved."

Regulatory Compliance Service

Practical MDR consulting offer from SPECTARIS GmbH: Knowing what matters
The new European Medical Device Regulation (MDR), which will not come into force until 2021 instead of 26 May 2020 due to the Corona crisis, is complex. Understanding and implementing it will be a major challenge for all of us. We have also had to experience this in many discussions and working groups with our members in the ophthalmic industry over the last few months. In order to support you and to make the regulatory requirements for (risk) class I ophthalmic optical products concrete and practical for you, we have bundled the knowledge of our in-house experts for you. Our SPECTARIS GmbH offers the so-called "Regulatory Compliance Service", a fee-based consulting service for distributors of Class I medical devices. The people behind our Regulatory Compliance Service know what is important when technical documentation has to be created, revised or generally the MDR requirements have to be fulfilled in a practical way.

For more information about our service and our contact persons, please see our flyer.

From initial analysis to maintenance: SPECTARIS GmbH offers a wide range of consulting services.

About us

Company portrait

The industrial association SPECTARIS has its roots in the 19th century. It all began in 1881, when the German Society for Mechanics and Optics was founded to "safeguard common interests" and emerged from the "Berlin Mechanics' Association". With the change of the name, there was also an expansion of the organization to the whole of Germany. Once a year the members met for a general meeting, the German Mechanics' Day.

At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, the German Society for Mechanics and Optics succeeded in presenting the high performance and innovative power of German precision engineering and precision optics with a collective exhibition. 76 German companies took part in the collective exhibition in Paris. Many exhibits had to be gathered from scientific institutes and universities all over Germany. The presentation at the world exhibition brought great recognition abroad.

Today, almost 140 years later, the SPECTARIS industry association still promotes the interests of its now more than 400 member companies in the innovation sectors of ophthalmic optics, photonics, analytical and medical technology and demonstrates the constantly growing innovative strength of the medical technology sector in Germany.
