New therapeutic approaches thanks to innovative nanoliter dosing technology
At this year's Compamed, Fraunhofer EMFT is providing an overview of its broad R&D spectrum: in addition to the silicon and metal pump portfolio, the researchers are also presenting miniaturized dosing systems developed for specific applications.
The silicon micropumps developed at Fraunhofer EMFT - including what is currently the world's smallest micropump at 3.5mm x 3.5mm - operate with extremely small stroke volumes and enable precise dosing down to the nanoliter range. Despite their small size, the micropumps are extremely robust and can build up back pressures up to 6 bar. In a current EU project coordinated by Philips, the silicon pumps are being used for insulin dosing.
Fraunhofer EMFT's metal pumps (stainless steel, titanium, metal) with a diameter of 20mm are suitable for dosing media with increased viscosity. The biocompatible titanium pumps and -valves were developed especially for implantable applications. RAPA is already a strong industrialization partner in the field of metal micropumps. The company is represented at Compamed with its own booth right next to Fraunhofer EMFT.
