BUNDLED NETWORK EXPERTISE IS A WINNING ARGUMENT.

The relaunch of MEDICA/COMPAMED 2021 sees a sizeable WILD Group presence and a whole host of innovations.

How can you combine different ideas to create an innovative product? Moreover, what distinguishes those specialists who develop and manufacture such high-tech devices using their experience, know-how and technical skill? The WILD Group will deliver illustrative answers to these questions at the MEDICA/ COMPAMED trade fair from 15 to 18 November 2021, offering visitors a glimpse behind the scenes of its success. And not only at the trade fair itself, where the senior management, members of the technical and business  development teams and CTO Wolfgang Warum will be present. „In addition, this year the group‘s development and production sites will be virtually present at the trade fair“, explains Heidrun Freimuth, WILD‘s expert for marketing and trade fairs. Potential new customers in particular will thus obtain a direct feel for how WILD works.

„Following two years without a trade fair and countless online meetings, we are really looking forward to a live relaunch of the real-life event, where we can exchange ideas face to face with experts and manufacturers on the latest technologies from the areas of medical & life sciences, in-vitro diagnostics and laboratory, laser and lighting technologies. This is why we took the conscious decision to send a large team to the fair“, says Freimuth. Exciting products from WIN network partner INSION GmbH will be complementing the trade fair portfolio of WILD and lighting specialist Photonic. The company is among the leading makers of monolithic microspectrometers and spectral sensors for OEM applications and miniature glass fibre optics.

A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

GREATER AGILITY, BETTER PRODUCTS.

Especially in development, agile project management often decides who holds the competitive edge. Together with organisational development expert Stephan Richter, WILD is taking a completely new approach in this regard.

There are situations that developers are familiar with but that still present a true challenge for others: Product requirements that are basically nothing more than just rough guidelines.
Projects that, at the beginning, don‘t go beyond the mere description of an idea.  Specifications that are changed at a very late stage. Or requirements that are suddenly no longer relevant. Following an intensive study of the topic of agile project management, the WILD Group has learned how to deal with these issues.

Moreover, with the support of organisational development expert Stephan Richter, WILD adopts methods already established, among others, in the automobile industry and takes these a step further. „Based on the concept of systemic project diagnostics, we begin by analysing the requirements and the complexity of a project. And we do so both on a technical and on a social level“, explains development manager Michael Reissig. „Depending on the result, we choose the right toolset to avoid breaking a butterfly on the wheel. The objectives of the customers, who usually set clear priorities on engineering, costs or timing, also determine the methods to be applied: from simultaneous engineering and the Cynefin framework for complex problems to the classic waterfall model“. As a result, WILD is an agile and valuable partner in all development issues. From ideas to devices. From prototypes to serial production.

BEST-PREPARED FOR THE TECH ONSLAUGHT
Stephan Richter, who is working together with WILD on the improvement of this toolset, explains why this flexibility is becoming ever more important: „We are currently experiencing a technology onslaught and we often see that a high degree of uncertainty prevails in  development. Of course, there is always a standard area, where the objective and the course are clear. It is outside this standard that things get more exciting. Where there is a requirement but no one knows yet what the solution should look like. This is where common sense is required. You need to take a creative approach and bring the people to the resources so they can work in a targeted manner. It takes completely new tools and other forms of communication to do that.“ Asking the right questions. Using classic tools like milestone planning to provide security where orientation is needed. Identifying regulatory circuits to harness their advantages for the project team. WILD has a whole range of methods at its disposal, allowing it to work with great efficiency and ensure a quick in-depth insight into a project.

FINALLY LIVE NETWORKING AGAIN!

For the re-start of MEDICA/COMPAMED 2021, the WILD Group presents itself with full manpower and lots of innovations.

How do different ideas come together to create a pioneering medical technology product? And what distinguishes specialists who develop and manufacture such high-tech devices with experience, know-how and dexterity? The WILD Group will provide vivid answers to these questions at MEDICA/COMPAMED from November 15 to 18, 2021, by offering a look behind the scenes. And not just on site, where CTO Wolfgang Warum will be joined by the division management, employees from development and business development. “In addition, this year the Group is also bringing its development and production sites virtually to the trade fair stand,” explains Heidrun Freimuth, responsible for marketing and trade fairs. This gives potential new customers in particular an immediate impression of how WILD works. “After a two-year break from trade shows and countless online meetings, this year we are particularly looking forward to a relaunch of the presence trade show, where we can meet face-to-face with experts and manufacturers to discuss the latest technologies from the fields of Medical & Life Sciences, In-vitro Diagnostics & Analytics, Laboratory and Laser Technology and Lighting Technology. That’s why we deliberately rely on a strong team on site,” says Freimuth. PURE DIVERSITY.

For WILD, working under ultra-clean conditions is a wide-ranging activity. Because, as current examples prove, the technology partner has mastered the art of adapting precisely to the task at hand and the customer's needs.

Disposables for medical technology, sophisticated optics for metrology, laser assemblies or conveyor systems for semiconductor technology - what WILD Gruppe manufactures under the cleanest conditions extends across all product groups. Many of these products are manufactured along a long cleanroom chain that extends from development through component production to packaging.

"In numerous cases, we are already involved in the design. Here, we contribute our know-how in the selection of the right surfaces and materials, among other things, and support customers in making their products cleanroom-compatible for series production. Challenging issues include cavities that are difficult to clean or the abrasion of threads that occurs during assembly," explains Martina Trinkel-Rudman from Business Development. For this reason, WILD works with the customer to define the optimal cleaning process at the component level. Most recently, the technology partner was intensively involved in the process design of a laser optics system and helped optimize the cleanliness of a 3D measuring microscope.

TRANSPORT IN THE CLEAN ROOM
Another exciting project was recently implemented for a leading international semiconductor manufacturer. Specifically, a modular conveyor system that is used to transport or store wafers in various cassettes between processing steps within the fab. "The development was up to the customer. We were responsible for procurement, cleaning, clean room assembly and packaging," explains Stefan Werkl, Head of Business Unit Optical Technologies WILD GmbH, who is already looking forward to further orders from the semiconductor sector. This is because WILD Gruppe scores particularly well in this industry with its many years of experience in vacuum technology as well as its mechanical, optical and electronic know-how. The competencies range from high-precision parts production and parts cleaning under extreme cleanliness requirements to assembly in the ISO 6 clean room and final testing.

"In order to prove the required cleanliness on the end product, we have various options at our disposal: including residual gas analysis to measure outgassing, visual inspections under UV light or vibration tests with subsequent optical inspection or product-specific tests. All in all, this in-house production enables a closed cleaning process all the way to packaging," emphasizes Trinkel-Rudman.

OUTSOURCING IS MOVING INTO THE FOREGROUND AS A STRATEGY.

More flexibility, an improved ability to focus on their own core business and the integration of complementary competencies are the decisive arguments why customers outsource their production processes to WILD.

According to recent studies, more than 25 percent of companies in Germany alone want to outsource more production processes in the next five years. The reasons for this are as varied as they are understandable. Current customer examples from WILD also show how much companies benefit from working with a strong technology partner.

In order to be able to concentrate more on its core competence, namely the production and development of materials for dental medicine, a German company recently reduced its own production and outsourced it to WILD Gruppe. "For us, this is one of the most beautiful demonstrations of trust," says Stephan Payer, Head of Business Unit WILD Electronics. Specifically, WILD was commissioned with the parallel relocation of five device types, including the establishment of the specific assembly environment and the development of an adequate supply chain for these products. "The devices have been established for years. One of the customer's main issues was therefore the problem that many components were no longer available on the procurement market and alternatives had to be found. By using the different manufacturing locations within the WILD Gruppe and the fact that we recognized great savings potential in the cost structure behind the manufacturing, we were also able to reduce the manufacturing costs," Stephan Payer emphasizes. Since the end of 2019, the project team has worked on the concept and created a plan with clear timing specifications. After training the assembly staff at the customer's site, the step-by-step relocation of the individual devices finally took place.

MORE FLEXIBILITY
But there isn't always that much lead time available. Often, things have to happen very quickly. As in the case of a medtech company for which WILD manufactures modules for PCR devices. "Due to the Corona pandemic, the customer's annual production volumes have doubled, and in some cases even tripled, from 2019 to 2021," Payer knows to report. "We had to check in a very short time whether the corresponding material supply is possible and how we can build up or shift resources in production. Since our employees are trained on several modules or devices, we were able to use them flexibly. Expanding our assembly lines and providing additional space was also easy to implement, as we are used to juggling our resources."

Responding to fluctuations in demand as quickly as possible was also the top priority in the production of assemblies used in blood gas analysis devices for monitoring lung function. "In this case, we were also able to supply the customer with more than double the normal requirement quantity at peak times," explains Payer.

OUTSOURCING OF PRODUCT UPDATES
Another customer in the medical technology sector was faced with the difficult challenge of upgrading a therapy laser that was already in use to a new laser handpiece. The additional organizational and assembly effort was not manageable in his already tight capacity situation. "We decided within a few hours to accept the project despite its short notice, thus once again demonstrating speed and flexibility," emphasizes Manfred Gallé, Head of Business Unit Medical Technology WILD GmbH. The project details were agreed upon within a few days. In order to understand the product in detail, analyze the assembly process and set up the project planning, WILD employees traveled to the customer's location at short notice. They then disassembled around 200 devices from different countries at the WILD site in Völkermarkt, installed new assemblies and performed the necessary final tests. WILD Gruppe is experienced in bringing complex production outsourcing projects in-house quickly, efficiently and flexibly. The technology partner does not shy away from taking on all the tasks involved in the shortest possible time and thus relieving the customer. From adapted order systems to a stable material supply to the optimisation of existing products. In addition, the Production Transfer Management System process plays a central role in the relocation. "The respective project team works its way through tried and tested checklists in an extremely focused manner and is therefore able to plan and implement all the necessary details in the areas of supply chain, assembly, material supply, infrastructure, auxiliary and operating resources as well as training, etc.", summarises CEO Josef Hackl. In this way, the know-how for new products can be built up in-house within a very short time and in a highly efficient manner, and the customer's production capacities can be relieved.
