Magnet assemblies as the radial coupling of a dialysis machine

Together, the two magnet assemblies form the radial coupling of a dialysis machine. The internal part of the coupling is connected to the pump that extracts the dialysate by cleaning the blood via the capillary filters. Since this part comes into contact with the dialysate, the magnet is overmoulded with medical plastic and it meets the strict medical technology quality requirements. Carbon bushings, which are also injected in a positive locking manner, serve as bearings. The external part of the coupling is connected to the drive motor. Both parts are strictly separated from each other. This allows power to be transferred contact-free and wear-free from the motor to the pump without contaminating the dialysate. The magnets that are being used consist of a plastic-bonded hard ferrite material and have received an 8-pole magnetisation at the inner and/or the outer diameter.

Sintered or plastic bonded magnets with plastic

Since the mid-80s, we have been overmoulding sintered or plastic-bonded magnets with engineering plastic. This results in finished functional elements that can be ideally integrated into higher-level assemblies.

Benefit from our many years of experience and in-depth know-how in the production of sophisticated technical plastic parts with magnets. The properties of magnets place special demands on the design of the injection moulding tools and the injection moulding process.

The required quality is ensured not least by our state-of-the-art tool and mould construction. We achieve economical production through a high degree of automation, whereby the corresponding solutions are developed, designed and manufactured in our own special machine construction department.

By means of rheological filling and warpage simulations, we already ensure during product development that technical plastic parts fully meet your requirements. So you can be sure that one fits the other.

Plastic bonded, pressed magnets

Composite materials are used for the production of plastic-bonded, pressed magnets. These consist of magnetic powder embedded in a plastic matrix. Depending on the shaping process, a basic distinction is made between two main groups of plastic-bonded magnets: injection-moulded and pressed.

For pressed plastic-bonded magnets, NdFeB powder is embedded in a thermoset plastic matrix. Epoxy resin, for example, is used as the plastic. Plastic-bonded NdFeB magnets are pressed axially in tools. Due to the very high filling level, up to 97 % NdFeB powder (mass percentage), significantly higher magnetic values can be achieved compared to plastic-bonded, injection-moulded magnets. The tools are simpler and less expensive than tools for injection-moulded magnets.

In contrast to sintered magnets, much more filigree geometries can already be produced with plastic-bonded, pressed magnets. For example, thin-walled rings with Ø 27 x Ø 24 x 30 mm and diameter tolerances of only approx. ±0.05 mm can be manufactured. As a rule, no further mechanical processing is required after this. However, for particularly high requirements, the magnets can also be ground to tighter tolerances.

Plastic-bonded, injection-moulded magnets with the tightest tolerances

Injection-moulded magnets are typical composite materials which are produced by embedding hard ferrite or rare earth magnet powder in thermoplastic materials (matrix material PA6, PA12, PPS). The amount of magnetic powder determines the magnetic and mechanical properties.

In the case of plastic-bonded injection-moulded magnets, the filling levels vary between 84% and 94% magnet powder (mass percentage). For this reason, the magnetic values are lower than those of plastic-bonded pressed magnets. Plastic-bonded injection-moulded magnets can be produced in complex geometries and in combination with inserts in one process step.

Sintered hard ferrite magnets

Hard ferrite magnets are made from iron oxide and barium carbonate or strontium carbonate. According to a recipe, the individual raw materials are mixed, granulated and calcinated (pre-sintered). Via different intermediate phases, a hexagonal ferrite phase (BaFe12O19 or SrFe12O19) is created. The pre-sintered granulate is ground further and can be pressed or sintered in the magnetic field – either wet or dry (anisotropic) or without magnetic field (isotropic). As ceramic materials, hard-ferrites have the proper mechanical properties with regard to hardness and brittleness. They can be machined, e.g. by grinding via diamond discs.
