Rapid prototyping

Before a product can be mass produced, it must pass various tests and the prototype must be fully functional and error-free in its application. Only then can the product be released for mass production. For this reason, our product developers produce so-called "hand samples" for development tests in addition to a simulation for very complex developments.

"Hand samples" or "lab samples" are prototypes that are 100% handmade in the lab. They are used to be able to evaluate the developed design very quickly on the part and to carry out initial preliminary tests in development - rapid prototyping is extremely helpful, especially with very complex parts.

Prototypes can be produced within 4-5 working days. They are hand-made (that's why there is a maximum of 10-20 of them), but they are made from the real material and properly vulcanized.

The difference to rapid tooling is that prototype samples are produced in the laboratory, but rapid tooling parts are produced in a near-series process. The advantage of prototype samples, however, is a more flexible and cost-effective processing, should the part geometry still change. In addition, the customer receives the first sample parts immediately upon completion of the development.

Micro injection moulding

As a standard, starlim//sterner produces components in large series with a minimum component weight of 10mg. Since silicone components with a weight of less than 10mg are subject to other laws, the definition of "micro injection moulding" begins here at starlim//sterner.

What is micro injection moulding in general
In micro injection moulding we understand 3 classes of components today:

  1. Injection moulded parts with microstructured areas (CD, "Plastics-Wafer", ... )
  2. Micro injection moulded parts or micro moulded parts with weight in the milligram range (micro housings, watch hands, ...).
  3. Micro-precision moulded parts with tolerances and minimum dimensions in the µ range (watch gears, ...)
