Rapid prototyping

Before a product can be mass produced, it must pass various tests and the prototype must be fully functional and error-free in its application. Only then can the product be released for mass production. For this reason, our product developers produce so-called "hand samples" for development tests in addition to a simulation for very complex developments.

"Hand samples" or "lab samples" are prototypes that are 100% handmade in the lab. They are used to be able to evaluate the developed design very quickly on the part and to carry out initial preliminary tests in development - rapid prototyping is extremely helpful, especially with very complex parts.

Prototypes can be produced within 4-5 working days. They are hand-made (that's why there is a maximum of 10-20 of them), but they are made from the real material and properly vulcanized.

The difference to rapid tooling is that prototype samples are produced in the laboratory, but rapid tooling parts are produced in a near-series process. The advantage of prototype samples, however, is a more flexible and cost-effective processing, should the part geometry still change. In addition, the customer receives the first sample parts immediately upon completion of the development.

Micro injection moulding

As a standard, starlim//sterner produces components in large series with a minimum component weight of 10mg. Since silicone components with a weight of less than 10mg are subject to other laws, the definition of "micro injection moulding" begins here at starlim//sterner.

What is micro injection moulding in general
In micro injection moulding we understand 3 classes of components today:

  1. Injection moulded parts with microstructured areas (CD, "Plastics-Wafer", ... )
  2. Micro injection moulded parts or micro moulded parts with weight in the milligram range (micro housings, watch hands, ...).
  3. Micro-precision moulded parts with tolerances and minimum dimensions in the µ range (watch gears, ...)

The starlim//sterner micro injection moulding offer

  • Micro-silicone components below 10 mg with high-precision undercuts and recesses
  • Single and multi-component injection moulding
  • Part removal by means of handling robots
  • Optical quality monitoring in the process
  • Aligned part deposit
  • Automatic parts packaging
  • On request everything also in the clean room

Product development

You have a vision for a new product in mind, but have not yet found a solution? Or you already know exactly which geometry your product should have, but still need support with the material selection? Then you are well advised to contact starlim//sterner product development.

The starlim//sterner R&D team has extensive material and process knowledge of silicone with a clear focus on the application and its requirements. We work closely with our customers. Depending on the requirements, we start with a joint brainstorming session, then move on to the design of the specifications and finally to the definition of the material and geometry.

By means of meaningful material and product tests, the team checks the function of your part even before it is manufactured in series and thus contributes significantly to your product success. For this purpose, the existing know-how from standardized tests (e.g.: Din, ISO,....) is used as a basis and transferred to the finished component through the well-founded knowledge under application conditions.

Design
From a rough concept to a finished, fully designed component- that is our design principle. We develop your silicone components from scratch - all we need is your catalogue of requirements.

What we need to know:

  • What function must the part fulfill?
  • Where will it be installed or where must it fit in?
With these requirements and data we create the final 3D design of your product, which serves as a basis for simulations. Our years of experience and countless development projects allow us to understand the material silicone with all its properties. We also incorporate our know-how in the application of silicone into the design of your component, creating the best product for you.

About us

Company portrait

Silicone flows through our veins.

In the car, in the baby pacifier, in the kitchen drawer - these are just a few examples where starlim//sterner products are visibly and invisibly installed. Because we at starlim//sterner specialise in toolmaking and the injection moulding production of small parts made of silicone in single and multi-component technology.

Our clear focus is on mass production. Annually, we produce over 14 billion silicone parts in our international group of companies (Austria, Canada, China, Italy, Germany). starlim//sterner is a contract manufacturer, B2B supplier as well as Tier 2 and Tier 3 supplier for the automotive industry and the largest processor of liquid silicone worldwide.
