GOKURI －Safe to Swallow: Wearable Device for Assessing and Monitoring Swallowing Abilities
[DESCRIPTION] GOKURI is an AI-powered point of care swallowing and related vital monitoring wearable device to manage aspiration pneumonia risk. It is robust and easy to use during both clinical practice and daily life. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people, especially the elderly and stroke patients in the world are dying from pneumonia due to inhalation of foods. For the first time, GOKURI quantifies swallowing, enabling the clinicians to objectively decide the next step in care. As an mHealth device with a cloud-based comprehensive visualization service, GOKURI is ideally suited for bedside and event monitoring.
GOKURI provides a comprehensive IoT/IoH (Internet of Human) solution with an edge-device consisting of a wearable sensory neckband and a smartphone app for point of care monitoring; and a cloud system for visualizing, tracking and in-depth analysis. The neckband is waterproof and made with an elastomer exterior suitable for extended human contact without skin irritations.
The physiology-based proprietary deep learning algorithm of GOKURI has an accuracy of 97% for the realtime detection of swallows through vibrations depicting swallowing sound acquired on the surface of the neck. Swallowing count, duration, variability and cough and other irregular breathing episodes are quantitatively assessed in realtime together with 3-axis neck posture and head movements. The neckband can be connected to the smartphone using BLE for secure and convenient wireless operation or through USB if the wireless operation is not permitted. Fully wireless can offer up to 6h of continuous monitoring. The smartphone also provides a point of care visualizer for bedside screening and assessment.
GOKURI cloud has a comprehensive dashboard for visualizing and tracking trends and an IoH platform for providing personalized care by connecting different stakeholders such as healthcare professionals, mealtime care assistants and the food manufacturers who all are important partners to ensure safe swallowing that can facilitate prolonging the chance to enjoy the full experience of eating, at least a day longer.
Often, elderly or stroke survivors or anyone else suspected in the risk of aspiration is given heavily modified food or taken out of oral diet all too quickly, dramatically affecting their quality of life and even the desire to live. With realtime swallow detection, quantification and visualization; at the point of care; GOKURI (Patent: JP-5952536) finally offers them a chance to enjoy the full experience of eating, at least a day longer.
Healthcare institutions such as hospitals and nursing care homes are often faced with a shortage of healthcare experts. Some of the patients/residents in these places fall into the borderline where they may be able to safely eat by themselves without the supervision of a medical professional, but the hospitals are not in a position to take the risk. Remote monitoring with GOKURI with its auto-detection algorithms allow the hospitals to free up the scarce and the most valuable human resources for critical and essential tasks.
When a someone residing at home contact a doctor related to suspected symptoms of aspiration, they would require to visit a hospital for a videofluoroscopic or a videoendoscopic assessment before any decision on the next step of care can be made. Hospital visits are hard and sometimes the waiting times for a test are long. Digital Health powered by GOKURI would allow a doctor to carry out initial screening while they are still resting at point care by using GOKURI as an event monitor.
