For many years, we have been able to achieve a high standard of hygiene in hospitals and operating theatres in the UK and elsewhere in Western Europe. However, intensifying cost pressures, the shortage of skilled surgical staff, and the increasing frequency of multidrug-resistant germs (MRSA) are now causing problems. Existing standards will therefore no longer be adequate in the future, and the risk of patients being exposed to infection during surgical operations will rise.

There has been numerous discussions & concerns on the effect of surgical light on operating theatre’s laminar airflow.

In the operating theatre, ventilation systems primary purpose is to provide ultra-clean air through the ceiling to safeguard the wound area of the patient from airborne bacteria.

This flow of ultra-clean air from the ceiling can be affected by surgical light installed just above the surgical field. The shape of the lamp head plays a significant role in altering the laminar flow patterns.

The lamp head with the open design is the ideal design as it did not alter the laminar flow altogether. The closed design comes 2nd with the laminar airflow having to go around thus enlarging the clean area next to the lamp. The semi-open design fare worst where the shape resulted in an upward stream of laminar flow which affected vertical ventilation.

Although different lamp shapes resulted in a distinctly different flow pattern in the room, this did not adversely affect the infection risk in any significant way.

The UPS also provides load protection from mains borne spikes, surges and electrical noise. To ensure this each luminaire should have its own primary (mains) and secondary (battery backup) supply. In accordance with HD60364-7-710, BS7671-2018 (18th edition) and HTM06-01:2017, the surgical operating light must have a back up of 3 hours.

Brandon Medical launches interactive virtual tour and live demonstration platforms of equipment package for operating rooms and critical care areas in order to support hospitals to return to elective surgeries before the complete roll-out of vaccination programmes, which can roll well into 2022

Too many emails start now with "under the current circumstances" Brandon Medical has taken a proactive position and we have launched an interactive virtual instrument for capital planners, architects, construction companies and hospital estate engineers to use for planning a quicker return to elective surgery.

With subsequent waves of infection and various degrees of lockdown measures around the world, we believe we can help hospitals return to elective surgery by offering a safer environment - through both infection control equipment, hygienic air-conditioning in operating theatres(Mediclean UCV) and Symposia telesurgery solutions.

Whilst the above are of high interest to surgeons and clinical team, it falls to the hospital procurement and Facilities and Estates engineers to implement the solutions, in conditions less than ideal, when they are forced to work remotely, where possible.

We would like to invite them, as well as clinical teams, to experience and view our operating theatre product range by visiting our demonstration suite virtual tour.
