Achromatic Lenses

Edmund Optics offers a large variety of Achromatic Lenses. Multiple anti-reflection coating options for the Ultraviolet (UV), visible, or Infrared (IR) are available, including UV-VIS, MgF2, VIS 0°, VIS-NIR, NIR II, or SWIR. Additionally, Achromatic Lenses designed specifically for the Ultraviolet (UV) or Infrared (IR) are available, which offer superior performance when compared to a standard Achromatic Lens that has been coated for the same or comparable wavelength range. Aspherized Achromatic Lenses, which combine an Achromatic Lens’ color correction with an Asphere’s superior spherical aberration correction, are also available. Triplet Achromatic Lenses are offered for applications requiring 1:1 conjugate ratios, or high power magnification.

Aspheric Lenses

Aspheric Lenses are used to eliminate spherical aberration in a range of applications, including bar code scanners, laser diode collimation, or OEM or R&D integration. Aspheric lenses utilize a single element design which helps minimize the number of lenses found in multi-lens optical assemblies. Said another way, unlike conventional lenses with a spherical front surface, aspheric lenses have a more complex front surface that gradually changes in curvature from the center of the lens out of the edge of the lens. This reduction in total element count not only helps decrease system size or weight, but also simplifies the assembly process. Integrating aspheres into an application such as focusing the output of a laser diode may not only decrease total cost, but may also outperform assemblies designed with traditional spherical optical lenses.

Optical Filters

Optical Filters are used to selectively transmit or reject a wavelength or range of wavelengths. Optical Filters are used in applications such as fluorescence microscopy, spectroscopy, clinical chemistry, or machine vision inspection. Optical Filters are ideal for life science, imaging, industrial, or defense industries. Edmund Optics offers a variety of Optical Filters for many applications, including bandpass interference, notch, edge, dichroic, color substrate, or ND. Edmund Optics also offers highly durable hard coatings for applications that require high optical densities with maximum performance.

Bandpass Interference Filters are designed to transmit a portion of the spectrum, while rejecting all other wavelengths. Notch Filters reject a portion of the spectrum, while transmitting all other wavelengths. Edge or Dichroic Filters transmit wavelengths that are either greater than the cut-on or shorter than the cut-off wavelengths. Color Substrate Filters utilize the material’s inherent adsorption and transmission properties, while ND Filters evenly reduce transmission across a portion of the spectrum.

Polarization Optics

Polarization optics are used in imaging applications to reduce glare or hot spots, enhance contrast, or to perform stress evaluations. Polarization optics can also be used to measure changes in magnetic fields, temperature, molecular structures, chemical interactions, or acoustic vibrations. Polarizers are used to transmit a specific polarization state while blocking all others. Polarized light can have linear, circular, or elliptical polarization.

Optical Prisms

Optical Prisms are used to redirect light at a designated angle. Optical Prisms are ideal for ray deviation, or for adjusting the orientation of an image. An Optical Prism’s design determines how light interacts with it. When light enters an Optical Prism, it either reflects off an individual surface or several surfaces before exiting, or is refracted as it travels through the substrate. For example, when light enters a right angle prism, it reflects off a single surface, causing the light to redirect at 90°. When light enters a wedge prism, though, a change in substrate thickness causes the light to deviate through refraction.

Optical Windows are flat, plane-parallel plates that are often used as protective barriers for electronic sensors or detectors from outside environments. Optical Windows should be selected based on the material transmission or mechanical properties of the substrate. Optical Windows do not cause change in the magnification of a system. Edmund Optics’ Optical Windows are offered in a variety of substrates, such as Germanium (Ge), Silicon (Si), N-BK7, UV Fused Silica, Zinc Selenide (ZnSe), or Potassium Bromide (KBr). Multiple anti-reflection coating options are available for the Ultraviolet (UV), visible, or Infrared (IR).

Optical Diffusers are used to control the diffuse area of illumination by evenly diffusing the light source as it passes through the Optical Diffuser. Edmund Optics offers Holographic, Opal, or Ground Glass Diffusers in a variety of sizes or diffusing angles. Holographic Diffusers offer superior transmission efficiency compared to glass diffusers. Optical or Ground Glass Diffusers are cost-sensitive alternatives.

Fixed Focal Length Lenses

Fixed Focal Length Lenses, commonly referred to as C-Mount Lenses, are used in many robotics or inspection applications. Fixed Focal Length Lenses are imaging lens assemblies designed with a single angular field of view, also known as constant focal length. These imaging lenses typically have a minimum working distance, but no maximum, extending performance out to infinity. Objects closer to the Fixed Focal Length Lens will appear larger than objects farther from the lens. Compact Fixed Focal Length Lenses, which offer a small physical size, are ideal for automated machine vision applications. Compact VIS-NIR Fixed Focal Length Lenses also offer optimized performance in the Visible to Near Infrared (NIR) spectrums. High Resolution Fixed Focal Length Lenses are designed for compatibility with 5 MegaPixel sensors. Edmund Optics Acquires Quality Thin Films, Inc.; Strengthens Position as Laser Optics Manufacturer

Edmund Optics®, the premier provider of optical and imaging components, announced today that it has acquired Quality Thin Films, Inc. (QTF). QTF, located outside of Tampa, Florida, offers a wide range of optical components with high laser damage and laser crystal coatings from the UV to the far IR.

For nearly eighty years, Edmund Optics has led the optics industry and continues to aggressively invest in laser grade optical technology. This acquisition, with its 14.000 square foot facility and talented laser optics experts, supports Edmund Optics to further expand its laser optics manufacturing capabilities across crystal and glass fabrication, polishing, metrology, high laser damage and diamond-like carbon coatings, inspection, and testing.

"QTF, like Edmund Optics, has a long history of technical innovation and strong customer service," said Marisa Edmund, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer and Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Edmund Optics. "Combining our strengths further demonstrates our commitment to the evolution of the industry through laser optics."

As part of this acquisition, Karl George Sr., President and CEO of QTF, will retire and his son, Karl George Jr., will continue to oversee the facility and its 30 employees.
