With application-oriented research and development in microelectronics, systems engineering and mechatronics, we strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises in particular. As a transfer partner of universities, we incorporate the results of basic research into applications. Under the guiding principle „We connect IT to the real world“ we are designing and creating sensor and actuator systems, control and feedback systems, and signal processing systems, then also integrating the systems and linking them to their environment.

Our institute was founded in 1995 as an associated research institute of the Ilmenau Technical University and is a non-profit company owned by the “Land” of Thüringen, Germany. At the headquarters in Ilmenau and the branch office in Erfurt, around 80 employees are currently working on funded projects, industry-related development projects and as R&D service providers.

IMMS‘ life science focus

Our life science focus is the research and development of application-specific integrated electronic circuits (ASICs) and sensor systems for quantitative rapid tests and in-vitro diagnosis and for the monitoring of therapeutic progress. The novel systems bring closer a future of point-of-care testing for, among other things, early cancer diagnosis, which is fast, reliable, cheap and largely automated.

We therefore build upon our multi-parameter microelectronics-based platforms and harnesses off-the-shelf, reasonably priced fabrication techniques and CMOS technology. One important research focus is the integration of a variety of detection principles into a single electronic sensor chip which can be used to measure biological and chemical features. We work in close conjunction with our life science partners to match the systems to their application, for instance by providing interfaces that are made of biocompatible materials or by accommodating the packaging.
