FallSkip

FallSkip is a biomechanical application, which allows clinicians to evaluate older adults´ fall risk, attributed to their functional state. The system uses an Inertial Measurement Unit integrated in an Android device, which analyses the biomechanical response when performing a modified protocol of the Timed up and Go Test (TGU).

An innovative application to evaluate fall risk in older adults looks for distributors

Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) presents at MEDICA trade fair (Hall 13 / booth A62) its latest services, products and future developments applied to healthcare sector. The internacional research centre participates as exhibitor in the Technology area of MEDICA, Düsseldorf (Germany).

One of the main objectives of IBV at this event is to internationalize its technologies for the healthcare sector. It’s the case of FallSkip, an innovative and reliable biomechanical application which allows clinicians to evaulate fall risk in older adults, attributed to their functional state.

In this sense, 30% of people over 65 and 50% of those over 80 years of age fall at least once a year. In more than 70% of cases, these falls have clinical consequences such as hip fracture which average medical cost is € 8,365 per patient, representing millions of euros on health expenditure.

What is more, 60,000 elderly people die every year in the world because of falls and, according to the WHO, every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency department because of falls.

FallSkip assesses the overall risk of falling by combining the result of the biomechanical test with the main risk factors: age, gender and patient history of falls. The fall risk result is available immediately after the test, ‘providing an accurate, fast and intuitive assessment on a single screen” as expresses the Head of Innovation in Biomechanical Assessment of IBV, David Garrido

FallSkip allows professionals to screen objectively the risk level of each patient, enables to undertake preventive and customized clinical interventions and, finally, reduces costs stemmed from social or surgical interventions associated to falls. ‘This device has been designed to be used by healthcare personnel in the clinical setting, where objectivity and time-saving provide a great added value to the clinical protocol’, declares David Garrido.

After its implementation, IBV is looking for distributors of this innovative product at MEDICA 2019, specially from Europe.
