The problem we Solve

Middle ear infection (otitis media) is the #1 Indication for Antibiotics and the #1 Reason for Surgery in Children. Nearly every child in the United States (93%) will suffer at least one severe enough to see a doctor. Current technologies for diagnosis of otitis media are decades old, subjective, and ineffective, with diagnostic error rates averaging 50%, particularly in differentiating bacterial vs. viral infections. Therefore, many children are getting prescribed antibiotics unnecessarily which also contribute to the growing worldwide problem of anti-microbial resistance (AMR). Our hand-held device addresses this problem.

OtoNexus Medical Technologies is developing a highly accurate device (resembling the traditional otoscope) to assess otitis media that will revolutionize how clinicians diagnose and treat millions of children each year.  Unlike all current technology for the assessment of middle ear infections, OtoNexus uses a unique form of Doppler ultrasound to accurately detect both the presence (or absence) of fluid and the type of fluid behind the tympanic membrane (eardrum), allowing the physician to immediately make the correct diagnosis (in 2–4 secs) and prescribe the proper treatment.   Our device provides the data physicians need to instantly and accurately assess middle ear infections, and in particular to differentiate when and when not to prescribe antibiotics.
