Cytomine SCRL FS is a spin-off of the University of Liège. The company commercializes products and services related to the open source software Cytomine, manages its community and coordinates its development.
The Cytomine software is a web platform for collaborative analysis of very large images and allows semi-automatic processing of large collection of images via machine learning algorithms.
The Cytomine software was designed to foster collaborative work, allowing efficient collaboration between physicians and scientists, teachers and students, managers and technicians, anywhere, anytime, on quite every device, as soon as an internet connexion is available. It allows very quick access to high-resolution images, allows users to annotate regions of interest on these images, add semantic information to these images and annotations, eventually run algorithms on them for semi-automated analysis and share all their work with teammates, using synchro- or asynchronously tools. It really imports both your microscope and your image analysis software in your web browser.
Since 2010, the Cytomine software has been used in biomedical research in topics such as lung cancer (detection and quantification of tumors in mice lungs), cells sorting (detection of abnormal cells in various samples), cells counting (count cells in specific regions in tissues), object classification (classify various phenotypes in developmental and toxicological studies), landmark detection (measure morphometric changes in developmental and toxicological studies), etc.
Since 2013, the Cytomine software is also used as a virtual microscope to teach histology and pathology, from campus based practical sessions dedicated to dozen of local students to online courses for thousands of worldwide students (MOOC).
Generally speaking, the Cytomine software can be used in research, education or diagnostic in every domain where collaborative analysis of large amounts of imaging data is needed.
The Cytomine cooperative commercializes services related to the open source software Cytomine, to allow clients to use it (scanning, hosting, installation, configuration …), or to expend its functionalities (special features development, integration in a company network and environment, etc). The Cytomine cooperative will also sell products such as on-demand proprietary machine learning algorithms adapted to the clients needs. For some specific markets such as diagnostic in hospitals, the Cytomine cooperative works in partnership with some well-established companies.
