Aluminum Impact Extrusion

Impact Extrusion
Metal Impact uses precut aluminum or steel blanks in its impact extrusion process. The Company has internal capabilities to cut blanks in-house, but in some cases these blanks are purchased from outside sources. These blanks are then cleaned and lubricated prior to the impact extrusion process. Metal Impact utilizes a total of thirty-seven mechanical and hydraulic presses in its impact extrusion process. Press capabilities include twenty-seven upright presses with tonnage up to 1500 tons and strokes up to 36 inches and ten horizontal presses with tonnage up to 1200 tons and capabilities of supporting rates up to 2,000 parts per hour. Additionally, we have two necking machines designed to neck low pressure cylinders.

Aluminum Impacts – Simple and Complex Shapes
Simple and complex shapes are generally asymmetrical in shape, have tolerances ranging in the +/- 0.005″ range, and require no special surface finish outside the normal range of the process. These products often require minimal tooling costs and may require other forms of secondary processing following the impact extrusion process. Examples of these types of products are air conditioning cans, power equipment handles, and oxygen concentrators.
Metal Impact’s capability to use automated press lines to produce high volumes at high production rates increases efficiencies.

Aluminum Impacts – Difficult to Manufacture
Metal Impact views the aluminum impact, difficult to manufacture product category, as its niche market. Product requirements in this category require much closer tolerances for size, concentricity, straightness, surface finish, and strength. These products usually require specialized processes utilizing multiple steps in the extrusion process to consistently maintain the product requirements. Tolerances for size can be as close as +/- 0.001″, straightness requirements of 0.0005″ over a 1″ length, and surface finishes of 8 microns. Often times, the capabilities of a manufacturer to meet product requirements comes down to owning specialized equipment, using the right lubrication, or the industry experience and technical capabilities of the staff. An example of this type of product that Metal Impact currently manufacturers is a component for the automotive industry. This component has a size tolerance of +/- 0.001″ over a 16″ length, a 16 micron finish, and a straightness tolerance of 0.008″ maximum total indicator reading over the length of the part.

Due to the complexity of the manufacturing process, tooling costs are generally higher for these products and these products generally are single sourced based on the large amount of technical requirements. Generally, competition for these products is limited to the in-house capabilities of the company. It is not unusual for customers to award contracts to manufacturers based on price and find out later that the manufacturer lacks the in-house capabilities to produce the product.

Metal Impact has extensive in-house capabilities to support our customers requirements.

About us

Company details

Metal Impact is a highly diversified contract manufacturer of aluminum impact extrusions and cold forged steel products. We provide products over a wide range of industries with a heavy concentration in the aerospace, automotive, military/defense, consumer product market, as well as agricultural equipment and the building product segments. We also offer value-added secondary operations to the extrusions, offering customers a wide range of machining, heat treating, and coating options.

Technical competency is the heart of the value we provide to our customers. Metal Impact will work directly with our customers using our superior technical capabilities to convert components to impact extrusions that previously may not have been suitable to this process.

With the capability to convert several components to a single product the customer most often benefits from lower tooling costs, increased product quality, lower inventory costs, and increased margins.
Over the years, Metal Impact has built its strong reputation in the industry for innovative design and processes, consistent high quality, and the capability to produce the most difficult to manufacture products.
By leveraging several emerging technologies, such as cloud computing, hosted services, and virtualization, Metal Impact provides cutting edge services our customers that are also cost effective to their business.

This highly robust architecture enables Metal Impact to maximize productivity efficiencies, and ultimately greatly improve product delivery and customer satisfaction.
