Microfluidic Consumables

Microfluidics revolves around the precise manipulation of fluids within geometries where at least one characteristic dimension is on the sub-millimeter scale. At these scales, physical properties such as surface tension, fluidic resistance and energy transfer play dominate roles and can present both challenges and benefits depending on the application. For example, Reynolds numbers in microfluidic devices are typically low, leading to laminar flow for all practical fluid velocities. Laminar flow means designers cannot rely on turbulence to mix fluids, but can leverage laminar flow to efficiently separate fluids and cells.

The goal of most microfluidic systems is to achieve a higher degree of integration than otherwise possible, thereby reducing size, cost and increasing reaction efficiency or speed. Many commercial applications in the life sciences space center on sample prep, assay reactions and detection.

SlipStream™ mircrofluidic devices manufactured from our laminated PDMS Biogasket™ technology that allows hybrid layered structures from glass, plastics, ceramics, and some metal and crystalline materials. SlipStream™ devices are suitable for rapid (in many cases, maskless) prototyping and volume production alike, enabling cost effective solutions to challenging microfluidic designs. We are a vertically integrated supplier with complete glass and ceramic machining capability and design support.

IDEX Health & Science Announces Acquisition of Finger Lakes Instrumentation

Rohnert Park, CA — IDEX Health & Science, LLC (IH&S) today announced the acquisition of Lima, NY based Finger Lakes Instrumentation, LLC (FLI).

Finger Lakes Instrumentation is a technology leader in the design, development and production of low-noise cooled CCD and high-speed, high-sensitivity cooled Scientific CMOS cameras for the astronomy and life science markets. 18 year-old FLI has three facilities located in New York State with 31 employees. It will continue to operate under current management as a business unit of IDEX Health & Science, LLC.

Commenting on the acquisition, IDEX Corporation Group President, Gus Salem, stated “the Finger Lakes Instrumentation acquisition fills an important strategic gap and is a fantastic complement to our life science optofluidic portfolio.” Salem continued,”Over the last several years, IH&S has brought together strong technology companies in fluidics, microfluidics, as well as optical illumination and detection to better serve the fast-growing needs of life science instrument developers. FLI is the third acquisition by IDEX Health & Science, LLC since July 2015 including Cidra Precision Services, Wallingford, CT and thinXXS Microsystems GmbH, Zweibruken, Germany.

IDEX Health & Science Announces Acquisition of New Microfluidics Company

Rohnert Park, CA — IDEX Health & Science, LLC today announced the acquisition of thinXXS Microtechnology that will accelerate growth of its microfluidics consumables business.

Located in Zweibrücken, Germany, thinXXS Microtechnology is a leader in the development and production of plastic microfluidic consumables serving the Life Sciences, Point of Care, and Veterinary markets. This acquisition will serve to establish IDEX Health & Science as the leader in microfluidic technologies, and sharpen its focus on the growth of integrated optofluidic sub-systems, components, and highly engineered solutions across its target markets.

Commenting on the acquisition, IDEX Health & Science President Gus Salem stated, “thinXXS is our second microfluidic asset acquisition that represents an incremental building block to our microfluidic technologies platform.” Salem continued, “the company’s market-leading technology and product portfolio are a fantastic fit with our microfluidics growth strategy by providing greater access to our core life science instrumentation market and creating new growth opportunities within the Point of Care, and Veterinary markets.”
