Knee Aspiration & Injection Trainer with Ultrasound Capabilities

An anatomically accurate adult knee model for injection and aspiration of synovial fluid from the knee joint, from both the lateral and medial aspects, using palpation or ultrasound-guidance.

The robust sealed knee includes knee joint, patella, patellar tendon and the suprapatellar space.

Key anatomical landmarks are realistic to palpate, enabling injection and aspiration to be practised, and accuracy improved. Discrete muscle, skin and fat layers, provide realistic tissue and needle response.

Performing knee aspirations and injections are fundamental skills required for Core Medical Trainees, as well as Rheumatologists, Doctors practising General Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgeons*

The model was evaluated by Charles Wakeley (Bristol Royal Infirmary) and Andrew Grainger (Leeds Teaching Hospitals, UK).

Skills Gained:

  • Injection into joint cavity
  • Aspiration of synovial fluid from both the lateral and medial aspects
  • Identification of anatomical landmarks using the palpation method or ultrasonic guidance
  • Patient positioning and management
  • Recognition of joint effusion
  • Ballottement
  • Competence using ultrasound technology to perform systematic scanning techniques and examination of the knee joint

The PROMPT Flex Birthing Simulator

PROMPT Flex - Advanced replaces PROMPT Flex - Wireless Force Monitoring (Bluetooth).

In addition to the functionality of the Standard model (80100), this version of the PROMPT Flex has a Bluetooth enabled baby that works in conjunction with Limbs & Things bespoke Birthing Simulator Software. It allows running of scenarios with the ability to record actions and interventions made and time to deliver baby. Traction applied to the baby’s head is measured in Newtons and plotted throughout the scenarios on an easy to see graph. On completion of a scenario, a PDF can be printed off to record the trainee’s progress and allow for a factual debriefing session.

A simple meter mode in the software allows trainees valuable practice in applying force to the baby outside of the context of a scenario - enabling them to become familiar with the feel of both safe and excessive force before encountering a real obstetric emergency.

Skills Gained:

  • Training and practice in the following types of birth:
  • Normal
  • Vaginal breech
  • Shoulder dystocia with force feedback*
  • Vaginal assisted (forceps and vacuum devices)
  • Third stage of labour
  • Cord prolapse
  • Urinary catheter placement
  • IM injection
  • Communication and teamwork skills

About us

Company details

History
Limbs & Things was established in 1990 by Margot Cooper, a medical illustrator and active member of both the Medical Artists Association of Great Britain and the European Association of Medical & Scientific Illustrators.

Considering the emerging technologies, healthcare and social issues of the time, there was an increasing movement in the medical profession toward developing a new way of gaining clinical skills.

Using her experience and knowledge gained in medical education she identified the growing need for a form of training healthcare professionals away from patients, cadavers and animals.

Based on this she decided to specialize in 3-dimensional models. Limbs & Things first products included dynamic, anatomical models of the foot and spine, as well as synthetic soft tissue models containing pathologies such as varicoceles and perianal hematomas.

This initial portfolio of anatomical models was supplemented by our development of laparoscopic trainers that embraced new techniques increasingly used in keyhole surgery. Working together with renowned specialist laparoscopic surgeons and utilising the anatomical accuracy established in the 3-D models, the new product took on the form of an abdomen and pelvis with anatomical landmarks and internal components representing realistic simulated organs.

Mission
From the beginning Limbs & Things mission was to create and supply a system of training in ‘hands-on’ skills for healthcare professionals, enabling confident and competent practitioners through the use of our products.

Today we retain the same strong ethics, to improve patient outcomes through realistic learning experiences gained from our products.

Vision
Our goal is to continue to provide products which allow clinical educators to successfully deliver their curriculum requirements in physical examination and procedural skills; as well as specialist skills in areas of medicine including Obstetrics, Gynecology and Urology, as well as continuing to develop products for Laparoscopic Surgery training.

This will be achieved by our collaborative work with leading clinicians and embracing new materials and technologies to help meet the educational needs of our customers of tomorrow.
