Bed alarm for elderly fall & wandering prevention
Today about 36 % of people over 85 years suffer moderate or severe dementia. In long term care units this usually means over 50 % of customers. A person who suffers from dementia, cannot press a pendant to summon for help. At night and day, many of these fragile persons leave their beds or chairs alone even though they should not take a single step without someone helping. A patient fall is the most common adverse event that occurs in long term care facility today.

Another problematic issue among dementia care is wandering. Patients, often continuously, leave their rooms and either go out to perhaps freeze or wander to other patients rooms and wake them up too. This can cause a lot of extra work and worry to nurses and lead to severe personal injuries.

Specially Designed for Dementia Care
Emfit Dementia Care products are specifically designed to summon automatic help for persons suffering from dementia. Products are based on Emfit's exclusive and patented ferroelectret sensor technology. This means unnoticeable sensors that are installed under mattress or even below flooring. These sensors are extremely durable and sensitive, which means new kind presence/absence notification. Unlike switching mats, these sensors notice person presence based on vital life signs.

Best Return-on-Investment
In long term care, Emfit's dynamic sensors have the best return-on-investment (ROI) on the market. Because the sensor is installed below the mattress it simply outlasts its rivals. For the most fragile patients, the ultra thin floor sensor provides alarm to the nurse already when the patient is still in bed but intenting to leave it and having the feet touching the floor.

How are we different?
Dynamic Emfit sensors operate differently to switch mats and therefore our alarm devices use sophisticated digital signal processing. Our bed sensor install below mattress and is therefore multi-person use. Its use-time can be over 5 years. That gives big saving compared to short use time sensors.

Emfit SafeBed is a state-of-the-art bed occupancy monitor for fall and wandering prevention. It is specifically designed for persons who are unable to summon for help unassisted, such as those suffering from dementia. It consists of a monitor device (D-1070-2G) and under-mattress bed sensor (L-4060SL). The monitor is operated with 2 pcs AA size 1,5 V batteries. An optional, medical grade AC adapter is also available.

Unique, Long Lasting Sensor
With several patents awarded Emfit bed sensor is totally undetectable as it is installed under the mattress, even under spring mattress. Therefore it outlasts its competition by years and saves from repeated sensor replacement costs.

Immediate or Delayed Notification
The alarm will sound in few seconds after the person has left the bed. It also allows for a preset delay before alarming so caregiver can be notified if the person does not return to bed within the given time. This will provide enough time for going to the bathroom and returning back to bed.

Sophisticated Signal Acquisition
The bedside monitor uses our sophisticated embedded software and electronics. Sleep monitor for detecting muscle contractions
The top selling seizure muscle contraction monitor and currently in use in over 60 countries worldwide. The Emfit MM is clinically proven technology for monitoring an individual who, during sleep, may experience faster, abnormal muscle jerkings that continue 10 seconds or longer. A quick, high-frequency alert allows a caregiver or family member ample time to respond. Easy to install, and no false alarms that can lead to user fatigue. 

The Emfit MM consists of two main components: a flexible and durable bed sensor placed under the mattress and a bed-side monitor with sophisticated embedded software. It detects when a person has continuous faster movements over a pre-set amount of time and then triggers a notification. The system also notices light movements, thus making it equally suitable for small children.

L-series sensor

L-series sensor is a fully shielded, low mass, thin, large surface sensor. It consists of a sensing element constructed of Emfit ferroelectret film and 3 layers of polyester film with etched aluminum electrodes. Crimped connectors are used for connecting to electrodes. Options available are a shielded cable soldered to connectors with temperature pressed and melt protection cover over the joint and 90 microns acrylic adhesive on one or both sides of the element.

We manufacture L-series sensors in custom shapes and sizes for high volume production. Reel width is 580 mm. For testing our standard lengths available start at 300 mm with 300 mm increments up to 50 meters. Standard widths available are 290 mm and 580 mm.

Uses
Safety mats, switches, security, vehicle and pedestrian counting, weigh-in-motion, force plate, machine monitoring, vibration/impact sensing, pyrometer, rain intensity, hail detection, seismic geo-phone, hydrophone, etc.

Sensor Operation
Operating in a reciprocal fashion, changes in the thickness of the Emfit sensor generate a corresponding charge and hence, voltage to appear on the electrodes. The transducer behaves like an active capacitor, consequently, loading of the signal by the input impedance of the measuring device must be considered. Due to the thinness of the films, the associated capacitance can be sufficient to give adequate low frequency response into standard 1 MΩ loads, but the use of an X10 probe will extend the low frequency range by a decade.

For extremely low force change levels, some buffering may be desirable. For the majority of analysis work, this is unnecessary and the film can feed directly to the instrument. Again, the low mass contributed by the transducer is of major importance, and its non-resonate behaviour. Frequency response is inherently flat to over 20 KHz with only the R-C roll off at low frequencies distorting the profile.

Though it is responding to thickness change rather than strain, low signal levels may be generated by low frequency flexing, so a distinction must be made between the frequency response of the film for changes in its primary parameter (i.e., thickness) and its relative behaviour compared with, say piezoelectric sensors. The sensor has a flat response over a very wide frequency range, with resonant frequency points well above 20 KHz.

S-series sensor

Emfit S-series sensor is a fully shielded, low mass, thin, small area sensor. It typically consists of a sensing element constructed of elastic electret Emfit film and 2 layers of polyester film with screenprinted silver paste electrodes. Several other constructions are possible depending on application specific needs. Crimped connectors are used for connecting to electrodes.

Options available are a shielded cable with heat shrink tube over the joint and 50 microns acrylic adhesive available on one or both sides of the element.

Manufactured in rolls, width 580 mm, divided into rectangular areas with size of 290 x 300 mm, which are electrically connected to each other. Can be cut to shorter sensors. Custom lengths up to 50 meters are possible.

S-series sensors are manufactured in sheet laminating. These sensors are always custom made to given shape and measurements. Samples available: rectangular 10×20 mm, round 22 mm diameter.

Uses
Vibration/impact sensing, accelerometers, switches, machine monitoring, acoustic emission detection, contact microphone, acoustic pickup, pyrometer, etc.

About Us
Team Emfit consists of 20 highly motivated, skilled and experienced professionals. Together the team has over 150 years of experience at Emfit. Many of the members are owners at the company, living in Finland, Germany, USA, Canada and China. The whole team has a complementary set of skills including science, engineering, sales experience and entrepreneurship.

The History and Today of Emfit
Emfit was founded in 1990 in Kuopio, Finland. The starting point of our business was the ferroelectret Emfit film, invented by our company founders. Through extensive product development, electroactive Emfit film has become the technological foundation of our company.

Our first decade was a very busy one. As Emfit sales and staff grew, our sensor design and manufacturing unit was relocated in 1998 to Vaajakoski, part of the city of Jyväskylä, in Central Finland. Today Emfit owns close to 1000 square meter premises in there.

Keijo Korhonen, one of the original founders, was the first managing director until 1998. Heikki Räisänen, a forward-thinking serial entrepreneur and main owner, then headed the company from 1998 until 2009. Emfit then welcomed Teuvo Heikkilä from Nokia, who led the company until 2011. Since then Heikki has again been managing director.

In 2000 Emfit began developing quasi piezoelectric application electronics using embedded digital signal processing. These electronics were first used for elderly care, next for epileptic seizure alarms and soon afterwards for non-body-contact vitals signs monitoring. By company’s 25th anniversary in spring 2015, tens of thousands of alarm systems are in active use throughout the world.

Since 2003 our whole products development focus has been purely on non-contact vital signs and bed monitoring applications. In 2004 we introduced our first non-body-contact vital signs monitor in the Finnish science center, Heureka. A lounge chair with hidden sensors astonished visitors by having the ability to calculate an individual’s heart and respiration rates and then transferring this data to a nearby display. We then demonstrated our first version of our DVM (discreet vitals monitoring) software at a Medica exhibition in 2005.

In 2006, we moved a portion of our R&D department to Frankfurt, Germany. This decision enabled us to become more involved with various research and development projects using our sensor technology in central Europe.

Emfit Corp, our subsidiary for sales and logistics in the United States, was founded in 2006 and is now located in Austin, Texas.

Our worldwide distribution network has ensured a steady increase in the sales of our core products. All our profit has been directed back into research and development and improving existing systems.

We have also been involved developing numerous custom embedded electronics projects for various industrial clients who we serve on steady basis. Our ferroelectret sensor and film license customers include several large corporates who together are employing over one hundred thousand of employees.
