Rapid Prototyping

A product has to pass a range of tests before it can be mass produced. This prototype must be fully functional for its intended application and must be free of any defects. Only then can it be released to enter mass production. Therefore, for complex products our developers make so called dummy-samples for development tests to complement simulation.

"Dummy-samples“ or "Lab prototypes“ are prototypes which are entirely produced in our own lab and are hand-finished. We use them to evaluate a new design quickly on the real part and in order to conduct initial test in the development phase. This is helpful in cases where complex parts have to be made using the Rapid Prototyping process.

Prototypes can be made within a period of 4 to 5 working days. They are made manually and this is the reason why the maximum number of a run is 10-20 items. They are made from the real material and they are completely vulcanized.

The difference with the rapid tooling: lab samples are made in the laboratory whereas rapid tooling parts are made with a process that comes close to mass production. The advantage of lab samples is that their production is more flexible and costs less money in cases where the geometry of the parts is not yet final. Another benefit is that the customer will get first samples when development has been concluded.

Development

Do you have a vision for a new product but no solution? Or, you are sure about the geometry of your product but need support for choosing the right material?

Then you will get what you need from the starlim//sterner's product development department.

starlim//sterner's R&D team possesses extensive knowledge of materials and the processing of silicone with a clear focus on the application and the challenges they pose. We work in close co-operation with our customers.
We start off with finding ideas together, continue to develop a list of specifications that are to be met and in the end we select the specifications for the material and the required geometries.

Following meaningful material and product tests conducted by our specialists we check the function of a component even before serial production takes place, a method that contributes significantly to the success of a product. The results from these standardized tests (according to DIN, ISO standards, etc.) serve as a basis. Combined with our thorough understanding of the matter this is transformed into a ready-to-use component under practical conditions.

Design
Proceeding from a rough concept to a well-designed finishedcomponent – this is our design principle. When we start to develop your silicone parts we start from scratch – all we need is your catalog of specifications.

What we need to know:
  • What function must the part serve?
  • Where will it be installed or where does it have to fit in?
With your specifications and data we then create the final 3D design of your product which is used as a basis for simulation tests. Years of experience and countless development tests make us understand silicone material and its properties. Our application expertise is used in the design of the component and this way we produce for you the best product.

Tool making

We stick to the "single source supply" principle. Marchtrenk is not only the center for the development of products. Here we design and produce the molds for injection molding products exclusively in our own tool making department. Our expertise is concentrated entirely here at our HQ. This makes us independent and we can react in a flexiblemanner.

You do not have to worry whether your tool has been calibrated properly to produce good components – we do that for you. We supply you with perfect silicone or multi-material parts.

Micro injection molding

Large series mass production is standard at starlim//sterner’s. Component weight goes down to 10 mg. Silicone components with a weight of below 10 mg are subjected to other physical laws. This is why starlim//sterner defines such products as "micro molding" parts.

General definition of micro-injection molding
The term comprises today 3 classes of components:
  • Micro injection parts with micro structured areas (CD, "plastic-wafer", ... )
  • Micro injection parts or micro molded parts weighing a few milligrams (micro housings, watch hands, ...).
  • Micro shaped components with tolerances and minimum dimensions in the µ range (gear wheels for watches, …).
Range of starlim//sterner micro-injection molded parts
  • Micro-silicone components below 10 mg with very precise undercuts and depressions
  • Single and multi-component injection moldings
  • Parts removal via Handling-Robot
  • Optical monitoring of quality during processing
  • Orientated parts depositing
  • Automatic packaging of parts
  • Optional: all activities are carried out in the clean room

Clean room

A clean room is a controlled environment used for the production of very clean parts. starlim//sterner owns a clean room that meets the requirements of the following standards: ISO 14644-1 class 7 & 8  (defines the number of particles in the air) and GMP class C or D (defines the number of germs in the air).

These silicone and 2-component parts are produced for the medical and the pharmaceutical industry. We also produce small and miniature parts for the automotive industry. The clean room incorporates the complete manufacturing process such as injection molding, post curing, washing and packaging of the molded parts.

About us

Company details

Silicone is in our veins.
starlim//sterner products are ubiquitous: they are in your car, in baby soothers, kitchen drawers, visible or not, to name but a few examples. starlim//sterner, the specialist for tools and for injection-molding produces small parts made from silicone using single or multi-material processes.

We concentrate on mass production. As an internationalgroup, active in Austria, Canada, China, Italy, Germany we produce more than 14 billion silicone parts per annum. starlim//sterner is a contract manufacturer, B2B supplier and TIER-2 and TIER-3 supplier for the automotive industry and the world's largest processor of liquid silicone rubber.

Because this is what we are good at.

starlim//sterner is still a family-owned enterprise. It is still led by the proprietors since the company's foundation back in 1974. A staff of 1100 now works in the group. We prefer long-term co-operations, regardless whether we speak of clients, suppliers or our own staff. Since 1976 starlim//sterner trains their apprentices to qualify for specialist in their respective fields.

Consistent.
And vivid.

The very existence of our company is secured by continuous but controlled growth, long-term relationships with our partners and our progressive way of thinking. For the past four decades we have been working in Marchtrenk on improving those important criteria. You can read in our company's history about these important aspects.
