A time-honored implant material

Stainless steel is the most basic medical material. It’s also the first material we ever drew into wire at Fort Wayne Metals.

We begin the stainless steel drawing process with our carbide dies for diameters greater than 0.100” (2.54 mm). From there, we transition to our polycrystalline dies for diameters between 0.040” (1.016 mm) and 0.100” (2.54 mm). These two die types provide a relatively rough surface which can be enhanced with additional finish treatments. Our single crystal natural diamond dies will take your stainless steel wire from 0.040” (1.016 mm) all the way down to our fine wire sizes. As stainless steel wire gets drawn to the finer sizes, it develops a more polished appearance.

An alloy like no other

Nitinol combines two closely related unique characteristics: shape memory and superelasticity.

Shape memory gives Nitinol the ability to be deformed at one temperature, and then return to its original shape when being heated to its transformation temperature. This effect is caused by the material changing from its low temperature monoclinic martensitic structure to the high temperature cubic austenitic structure. Transformation temperatures in our finished Nitinol wire range from -15°C to +22°C, depending on the grade of Nitinol used. Shape memory Nitinol wire can be used to develop implants that may be delivered into the body in a compact shape and then activated into their functional form once they have been deployed.

Perfect for the human body.

Titanium has many advantages over stainless steels: despite being lightweight, it provides great strength and outstanding corrosion resistance. In the area of medical devices, another property is just as important: Titanium is fully biocompatible. Additionally, commercially pure Titanium promotes osseointegration, or the ingrowth of bone into the material, which helps anchor implants in the body.

Fort Wayne Metals has worked with Titanium for decades – we have even established a proprietary drawing process that allows us to produce material with a much smoother surface than our competition. To further expand this material’s usefulness, we have recently developed 4TiTUDE™, which combines the strength of alloyed Titanium with the beneficial attributes of commercially pure grade 4 Titanium.

Laser Ablation

Laser ablation, or laser wire stripping, is a non-mechanical means to remove the coating from select locations on a given wire substrate compared to conventional wire stripping. The result is clean, undamaged wire that has not been marred by mechanical cutting blades. The laser ablation process provides greater flexibility in locating the areas of coating removal, allowing you to design more complex components.
