Isabel Schellinger: implant for aortic aneurysms

As part of our "Women in Health" series, we introduce you to Dr. Isabel N. Schellinger. She has more than ten years of experience in clinical research at Stanford University and the Karolinska Institutet. And she co-runs Angiolutions, a company that takes her research findings into first-in-human trials.

Angiolutions is testing the implantation of a stent to stabilize abdominal aortic aneurysms: the A³ shield is placed in the aorta in a minimally invasive procedure and is intended to prevent an existing aneurysm from enlarging further. This reduces the risk of the aneurysm rupturing.

Isabell Schellinger is particularly inspired during her work as she turns research results into a real treatment option for people who are at risk from an aneurysm. The A³ Shield has the potential to be used earlier and more safely than current treatment options.

To achieve this goal, she gathered an interdisciplinary team covering the fields of medicine, technology and regulation. Her most important insight from this: "I learned that shared goals, transparent metrics, and patient focus turn different languages into one execution rhythm."
