Robotic shorts "WalkON" make walking easier and promote mobility

The "WalkON" robotic shorts use modern technologies to support the wearer's movements: 

• Drive and support: Two thin wires, which run from the thigh to the hip belt, pull upwards during the swing phase and relieve the thigh muscles. 

• Sensors: A measuring device on the thigh strap analyzes the angular position and speed of the legs and controls the motors accordingly. 

• Individual adaptation: The system automatically adapts to the movements and weight of the legs, regardless of the user's age or fitness level. 

"The system recognises how fast or slowly the person is moving, adapts to the respective weight of the legs and provides individual support accordingly," explains doctoral student Enrica Tricomi. The shorts do not require any pre-settings and are ready for use within a few minutes. 

The robotic shorts aim to enable older or frail people in particular to lead a safer and more active lifestyle. "It is particularly important for older people to feel safe," emphasizes Prof. Lorenzo Masia. 

• Energy saving: According to studies by the researchers, wearing the pants reduces the energy expenditure when walking by up to 18 percent in younger people and over 10 percent in older people. This corresponds to a weight reduction of 10 and 6 kilograms respectively. 

• Promotion of health: Regular exercise supports the metabolism and has a positive effect on cardiovascular and lung diseases. 

• Psychological safety: A survey of test subjects revealed a high level of satisfaction and a feeling of control when wearing the pants. 

The "WalkON" technology differs from conventional exoskeletons in its lightweight, textile design, which is reminiscent of clothing. The pants are compact and fit into a small backpack. Professor Masia sees great potential for further modular development: "In a few years, you will buy a pair of shorts, attach a motor to them and plug in two cables. The system will then be ready to take you into the mountains." 

In addition to older people, people with health restrictions are also an important target group for the robotic shorts. The technology could enable them to remain active and independent for longer. In the long term, the researchers are aiming to make the technology accessible for leisure activities such as hiking or jogging.
