In order to treat even complex cardiac arrhythmias more effectively, the Optrell mapping catheter was approved in Europe at the end of August 2024. At the beginning of September, the UMG Heart Center was the first in Germany to successfully perform this procedure. Dr. Leonard Bergau, Deputy Head of Clinical Electrophysiology and Senior Physician in the Department of Cardiology and Pneumology, led the procedure.
The catheter is guided through the groin to the heart, where it measures the electrical activity and structure. "The resulting 'map' of the heart enables us to identify the areas that cause problems and to better position the electrode catheters for sclerotherapy in the beating heart," explains Dr. Bergau. The Optrell mapping catheter uses a special technology that enables the electrical system of the heart to be mapped in high resolution - a significant improvement on previous methods.
