Mobile patient lifts enhance ICU patient recovery

A new randomized controlled trial conducted at Toho University has revealed significant advancements in the recovery process of ventilated intensive care unit (ICU) patients through the utilization of mobile patient lifts. This study brings forth valuable insights into the potential benefits of early mobilization for critically ill patients.

Critically ill patients undergoing treatment in ICUs often face challenges associated with prolonged immobility, leading to decreased physical strength and diminished quality of life post-recovery, commonly known as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) or ICU-acquired weakness (ICU-AW). Early mobilization, which involves initiating physical activity in the early stages of ICU treatment, has been proposed as a preventive measure for ICU-AW. However, its effectiveness has been subject to ongoing debate within the medical community.

In this randomized controlled trial, 80 ventilated ICU patients were enrolled to investigate the impact of early mobilization supported by mobile patient lifts. The intervention group, assisted with mobile lifts, demonstrated earlier standing compared to the control group, highlighting the effectiveness of this approach in facilitating mobility. Additionally, patients in the intervention group exhibited higher Functional Status Score for the Intensive Care Unit (FSS-ICU) scores at ICU discharge, emphasizing the potential benefits of early mobilization in enhancing physical function during ICU stay.

Dr. Ginga Suzuki, the lead author of the study, emphasizes: "We anticipate that proactive early mobilization, with the assistance of mobile patient lifts, will play a pivotal role in preventing post-intensive care syndrome. To draw conclusive evidence for the advantages of early mobilization, further studies should accumulate supportive data."
