Physical therapy has long relied heavily on estimates when it comes to mobility and strength – and thus overlooked many things. That is currently changing: away from feelings and toward objective data – for more precise treatments and better therapeutic success.
"Objectivity instead of intuition" is the goal of the US company BTE, which has developed a versatile physiotherapy device with linked data analysis for precisely this purpose.
Interview Dan Squire, Clinical Specialist at BTE
In rehab, in human performance, in athletics, it's important to test the right things and treat the right things. And doing that with objective data like, our system can capture is extremely important.

Precise diagnostics through versatile metrics
Interview Dan Squire, Clinical Specialist at BTE
The type of data that we can collect is objective data that looks at muscular performance in terms of strength and range of motion.
We can look at isotonic, isometric, isokinetic types of muscular contractions and movements. And we utilize that data to figure out if there's deficits in human performance or muscular performance. And then we can generate treatment protocols off the software.
Some other data that can be collected is, measurements on peak force. How much strength is in muscle contraction? We can also look at endurance, the endurance of a muscle muscle group and look at the power or the total work done. So there's a lot that can be captured that allows us to really figure out how, how an individual may be performing.

Scalability for all patient groups
Interview Dan Squire, Clinical Specialist at BTE
Some of the features are the torque ability. It can handle and provide a lot of resistance, that will allow us to test really powerful individuals. But we also have the ability to, lower those torque and force parameters so that we can do fine tuned exercises with hands and fingers.

Software as a bridge between therapists and patients
Interview Dan Squire, Clinical Specialist at BTE
What makes this system, nice to use as a therapist, or a sports medicine professional or rehabilitation specialist Is that the the objective data that it can, can capture allows you to hone in and be very specific about what an individual may be dealing with. And when you know how they are specifically affected by strength, deficits or range of motion deficits, you can generate very specific treatment protocols that allow them to get back to their optimal level of function.
And the software capabilities are, are, updated and user friendly and very intuitive. Making it easy to use as a clinician, and patients and individuals being treated on the, on the system, will appreciate what they can see and the data it provides to give insight into how they're doing and progress and, areas that they need to make improvements in.
