Retinal degenerative diseases such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa can cause severe vision loss, and curative options remain limited. A team led by Prof. Sedat Nizamoğlu at Koç University reports an ultra-thin, wireless stimulation platform designed to convert near-infrared light into controlled electrical signals for the retina, within established ocular safety limits.

How the technology works

The researchers designed a photovoltaic nano-assembly combining zinc oxide nanowire arrays with silver–bismuth–sulfide nanocrystals. The platform uses near-infrared light, which penetrates tissue more deeply than visible light, to trigger precisely controlled electrical stimulation.

Evidence from preclinical retinal models

Performance was evaluated in retinal models from rats with vision loss. The experiments showed strong, repeatable, and temporally precise responses in retinal neurons. Koç University also reports analyses of cell viability, biocompatibility, and long-term stability indicating no cellular stress or toxicity, alongside a negligible temperature increase during operation.

Potential beyond the eye

According to the press release, the same concept could be relevant for broader neuromodulation applications involving electrically excitable tissues such as the brain, heart, and muscles, depending on future validation and clinical development.

Commenting on the study, Prof. Sedat Nizamoğlu said: “This study demonstrates that a nanotechnological retinal implant approach could potentially restore vision in the future for individuals who have lost visual function due to macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.”
