Robot assistants gain ground in hospitals and rehabilitation

A robotic dog accompanying physicians during hospital rounds may sound futuristic, but researchers in Germany are already testing exactly that. At the same time, rehabilitation robots are learning to adapt to stroke patients, while sensor equipped operating rooms are exploring how robotic assistants could support surgical teams.

What connects these projects is a broader shift in healthcare robotics. Hospitals are exploring how robotic systems can reduce administrative workload, support overstretched clinical teams, and improve workflow efficiency across care settings.

At University Hospital Würzburg, researchers are studying how robotic systems could support staff during routine clinical tasks. The project, called HELIA, is being developed together with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, FZI Research Center for Information Technology, and Forschungszentrum Jülich.

The robotic dog is designed to respond to spoken instructions from authorized staff members. Future applications could also include transporting materials or assisting with logistics tasks. One of the project’s most notable aspects is its focus on natural language interaction. Instead of requiring complex programming, researchers want clinicians to explain tasks verbally so the robot can translate instructions into executable actions.

The project highlights a broader trend in healthcare robotics. Hospitals are increasingly looking for systems that integrate naturally into clinical environments and reduce administrative workload without disrupting existing processes.

In addition, in the EU funded PRIMI project, researchers at Bielefeld University are developing robots that can analyze and respond to human movement during stroke rehabilitation.

Using AI and concepts such as mental imagery, the systems are designed to observe movement patterns, adapt exercises in real time, and support individualized therapy. Researchers believe this could help address growing challenges in stroke care.

Nearly 270,000 people experience a stroke every year in Germany alone, and many patients require long term therapy to regain mobility and motor function. The project also reflects how robotics, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence are increasingly converging in modern rehabilitation technologies.

At the Technical University of Munich, researchers are testing how robotic assistants can integrate more efficiently into surgical workflows. As part of the ForNeRo research project, scientists created an experimental operating room equipped with depth cameras, infrared tracking systems, microphones, and physiological sensors. Together, these technologies generate a digital twin of the surgical environment.

The project analyzes surgeon movements, communication, and workload during robot assisted procedures. Researchers hope the collected data will help improve operating room ergonomics, reduce physical strain on surgeons, and support more efficient robotic workflow integration.

Whether on hospital wards, in rehabilitation, or inside the operating room, robotic systems continue to move beyond isolated applications. The goal is not fully autonomous healthcare, but systems that can take over specific routine tasks and support medical teams in everyday clinical practice.
