Power security in hospitals: backup systems are a matter of life and death

When the power grid fails, critical hospital systems simply stop and patients are in danger. Power security in hospitals is therefore not a question of convenience but a foundational condition of patient safety.

A hospital power outage puts clinical systems at immediate risk. The most critical are life-support devices like ventilators, infusion pumps, or cardiac monitors, whose interruption can be directly fatal within minutes. Operating theatres lose lighting and equipment mid-procedure. Intensive care units and neonatal units are particularly vulnerable because the patients they treat barely have physiological reserves. Beyond these acute risks, outages compromise electronic health records, disrupt access-controlled areas and cooled medication or blood storage, and take down essential diagnostic systems.

When the grid fails, hospitals do not attempt to restore full operations immediately. The priority is sequenced, controlled, and defined in advance. Restoring loads in this sequence prevents system overload and keeps voltage and frequency stable during the transition.

Facilities usually organize backup power delivery into three branches: the Life Safety Branch covers emergency lighting, fire alarms, and core communications; the Critical Branch covers ICUs, operating theatres, and direct patient care areas; the Equipment Branch covers HVAC, elevators, and refrigeration.

During an outage, inter-hospital coordination becomes critical, as it may be necessary to evacuate a hospital affected by a power outage. This is why facilities must have agreed protocols for patient transfers and communication with ambulance services and receiving hospitals.
