Lighting the way: Syntropic Medical's promising non-invasive depression therapy

In this interview with MEDICA-tradefair.com, Mark Caffrey unveils a novel approach to treating depression that harnesses the power of light, potentially sidestepping the drawbacks of traditional pharmacological therapies.

Mr. Caffrey, what inspired you to establish Syntropic Medical and develop your innovative technology?

Mark Caffrey: My journey in medical device innovation began during my studies at the University of Galway, a hub for this field. The inspiration specifically for Syntropic came from meeting Dr. Alessandro Venturino and Prof. Sandra Siegert at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria. They had discovered a cell type in the brain that could potentially rewire its connections, offering a new approach to treating depression, a prevalent issue in today’s society.

Could you elaborate on how this technology works?

Caffrey: Our technology leverages a concept called neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. This ability decreases as we age, but our device uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate a type of brain cell known as microglial cells. These cells then play a role in temporarily removing the inhibitory structures around neurons, essentially 'unlocking' the brain's natural ability to form new connections and heal itself.

The light, delivered through a device resembling a pair of goggles, sends precise signals to these cells, promoting the brain’s reorganization. This process has shown to alleviate symptoms by enabling the brain to counteract some of the neural pathways that contribute to depression.

What results have you observed with this technology so far?

Caffrey: Our preclinical trials have been very promising. For instance, we observed a significant reduction in behavioral symptoms associated with depression in our models.

These results are indicative of the potential in humans, which is why we are eager to move forward with investigations in humans to validate our findings and ensure the technology is both safe and effective for widespread use.

Turning to the development process, what challenges have you faced in creating the prototype?

Caffrey: One of the most significant challenges is engineering a device that patients would feel comfortable using regularly, especially considering that our target users often experience heightened anxiety or other symptoms. Ensuring the device is non-invasive and user-friendly is paramount. We conduct extensive ergonomic studies and collaborate with designers to create a prototype that feels more like standard eyewear than a medical apparatus. Additionally, perfecting the light delivery mechanism to ensure safety and efficacy without causing discomfort is a complex aspect of our development process.

Looking ahead, what are the next steps before this technology can be made available to the public?

Caffrey: The next steps involve rigorous clinical trials to establish definitive evidence of the technology's benefits and to navigate the regulatory landscape for medical devices. We are also exploring partnerships with mental health professionals and institutions to refine our approach and prepare for market entry. Our goal is to make this technology accessible to patients through medical recommendations, offering a viable alternative to traditional drug therapies, which often come with undesirable side effects.

How do you see this technology impacting the current pharmaceutical landscape?

Caffrey: While there is a shift towards seeking non-pharmaceutical treatments, our technology is not meant to compete directly with pharmaceuticals but to expand the toolkit available to medical professionals and patients. We believe our technology will serve as a complementary option that can be integrated with current treatment plans, enhancing overall outcomes and potentially accelerating recovery in conjunction with traditional methods.
