Imaging device for early gastrointestinal cancer detection

Led by the researchers Dr. Jane Crowley and Dr. George Gordon from the University of Nottingham, the development of this imaging device represents a significant milestone in cancer diagnostics. Published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics, their study showcases the potential of SFDI technology for early detection of gastrointestinal cancers.

The developed method is based on spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI), which allows for distinguishing healthy tissue from malignant tissue. In SFDI, a repeating 2D pattern of light is projected onto a target area. By examining the intensity of the reflected light patterns, it's possible to derive information about the optical properties of the tissue under investigation, which can reveal the presence of cancerous lesions. Despite the simplicity and affordability of this imaging technique, current SFDI systems are too bulky to fit inside standard endoscopes, limiting their use in colorectal cancer screening.

Experiments conducted with tissue phantoms simulating the optical characteristics of both healthy and cancerous tissues demonstrated the potential of the device to deliver exceptional contrast between the two tissue types. Specifically, the sensitivity and specificity values for detecting squamous cell carcinoma were estimated to exceed 90 percent, aligning with the current clinical standards of medical devices.

The newly developed imaging device offers a promising approach to early diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancers, addressing key challenges in current screening methods. By harnessing spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) technology, this device provides a cost-effective solution with enhanced accuracy for detecting malignant tissue. Its ultraminiature design enables seamless integration into standard endoscopes, facilitating minimally invasive procedures and improving patient comfort. Crowley and Gordon emphasize that the proposed system could be miniaturized further to a diameter as small as 1.5 mm, allowing for minimally invasive endoscopic procedures. Additionally, the device's ability to project patterns consisting of multiple wavelengths simultaneously allows for comprehensive analysis of tissue layers at varying depths, enhancing diagnostic capabilities.
