The new sensor from Fraunhofer IPM measures the oxygen content in the air we breathe precisely and quickly, which significantly improves patient monitoring.

Oxygen saturation in the blood is crucial for the correct functioning of the human body. Particularly in critical medical situations, such as intensive care patients, precise monitoring of oxygen levels is essential.

The miniaturized non-invasive sensor can be integrated into existing ventilators using a T-connector.

Technical innovation of the sensor

The sensor uses fluorescence quenching technology to measure the oxygen concentration. A fluorescent layer on an aluminum substrate is irradiated with short-wave light, causing it to glow. The intensity of the light decreases as the oxygen concentration in the breath increases. This method enables oxygen saturation to be determined quickly and accurately, explains Mahmoud El-Safoury, project manager at Fraunhofer IPM.

Integration and application

The 26 millimeter diameter sensor can be easily inserted into any T-connector, which in turn are connected to breathing masks and breathing tubes. This makes it ideal for use in clinical practice, by emergency services and for monitoring patients at home. The sensor allows healthcare professionals to monitor oxygen levels continuously, which was previously only possible periodically.

Current studies are focusing on the cross-sensitivities of the sensor to other gases and the effects of humidity and temperature on measurement accuracy. The results of these studies will help to further improve the applicability of the sensor and ensure its long-term stability.
