Fluorescence sensor for measuring oxygen in breathing air

Previous methods such as pulse oximetry often provide inaccurate results, which can lead to less optimal patient care. The new sensor, developed by researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM, offers a non-invasive, precise alternative to conventional blood gas analysis.

The sensor uses fluorescence quenching technology to measure the oxygen concentration. A fluorescent layer on an aluminum substrate is irradiated with short-wave light, causing it to glow. The intensity of the light decreases as the oxygen concentration in the breath increases. This method enables oxygen saturation to be determined quickly and accurately, explains Mahmoud El-Safoury, project manager at Fraunhofer IPM.

The 26 millimeter diameter sensor can be easily inserted into any T-connector, which in turn are connected to breathing masks and breathing tubes. This makes it ideal for use in clinical practice, by emergency services and for monitoring patients at home. The sensor allows healthcare professionals to monitor oxygen levels continuously, which was previously only possible periodically.

Current studies are focusing on the cross-sensitivities of the sensor to other gases and the effects of humidity and temperature on measurement accuracy. The results of these studies will help to further improve the applicability of the sensor and ensure its long-term stability.
