These systems facilitate tracking materials, increase safety, and promote sustainability. 

One key factor in making healthcare more environmentally friendly is selecting appropriate materials. In this regard, reusable and biodegradable materials are becoming increasingly important. These materials significantly reduce waste without compromising the high hygiene standards of everyday medical practice. New developments in the field of medical consumables are particularly evident in surgical gloves, catheters, and syringes. Some manufacturers offer items made from bio-based elastomers or that are approved for reuse after validated reprocessing. Others rely on materials that can be thermally recycled in energy-efficient plants after use. Packaging is also being designed to conserve resources, such as using mono-material films that are easier to recycle and reducing outer packaging. 

Certifications and standards are key to evaluating sustainable medical devices. In addition to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, the "Blue Angel" eco-label and EU-wide eco-labels provide guidance for procurement. These labels consider the origin of materials, energy consumption during production, and recycling options, among other things. 

Practical examples from hospitals demonstrate that ecological measures, sustainable medical devices and clinical requirements can easily coexist. Some institutions use glove systems made from recyclable materials, reintroduce reusable instruments in certain specialty areas, and source products exclusively from certified suppliers. These approaches allow clinics to reduce their ecological footprint while ensuring patient safety. 

In addition to material use, energy and water use in hospitals also play a decisive role. Many processes, from sterilization to cleaning, require large amounts of both resources. Significant savings can be achieved by using modern equipment, sensor-controlled faucets, and efficient treatment systems. 

Reducing packaging also contributes to sustainability. Manufacturers are increasingly developing modular packaging systems that adapt to the size of the product. This reduces the amount of material required and lowers transport volumes. 

Staff are a key factor in the success of sustainable measures. Training and clear recommendations promote awareness of environmentally friendly work practices. Doctors, nurses, and technicians can contribute significantly by handling materials carefully, separating waste properly, and conserving resources. 

Hospitals are increasingly seen as role models for sustainable transformation. They combine the highest hygiene standards with social and environmental responsibility. Clinics that implement sustainable strategies contribute to climate protection and strengthen their image as responsible institutions in the healthcare sector.
