Sustainable protection: disposable gloves made from food waste

Disposable gloves are among the most widely used consumables in healthcare. They are indispensable for hygiene and infection control but generate large amounts of waste. A research project in the UK is now investigating an alternative: biodegradable gloves made from food waste. But for which applications in everyday clinical practice could such materials be suitable?

During examinations, in nursing care, or in the laboratory, gloves protect medical staff and patients alike. They are among the most important disposable products in healthcare.

But high consumption has a downside: millions of gloves are used every day and then disposed of – mostly as clinical plastic waste. A recent study from Australia shows how significant the environmental impact can be: in two surgical wards, each with 32 beds, in a large tertiary referral and teaching hospital in the New South Wales region, an intervention to reduce unnecessary glove use cut consumption by 13,020 gloves per month. This resulted in around 45 kg less waste and approximately 443 kg less CO₂ emissions per month.

Such figures illustrate the contribution that even small changes in the use of disposable products can make. At the same time, there is growing interest in more sustainable materials that could reduce resource consumption during production.

A research project conducted by Aston University and the British company PFE Medical is investigating a possible answer to this question. The aim is to produce medical gloves in a more resource-efficient manner using bio-based materials.

By-products from food production, such as fruit peels, corn residues, or residues from milk processing, are being considered as raw materials. These contain natural polymers that can be processed into new materials.

It is still unclear how such gloves will be disposed of in the future. Even biodegradable materials must generally be treated as medical waste and disposed of safely in everyday clinical practice. Their advantage therefore lies primarily in their more resource-efficient production and potentially lower ecological footprint.

The project is part of a so-called Knowledge Transfer Partnership. In this partnership, universities and companies work together to translate research results into marketable innovations. The focus is not only on material development, but also on the question of how sustainable solutions can be integrated into medical supply chains in the future.

Despite their sustainable approach, the new materials are not intended as a universal replacement for all medical gloves. This is because medical gloves must meet strict requirements – such as providing a reliable barrier against pathogens, sufficient tear resistance, and high material resistance to liquids and chemicals. In Europe, these properties are regulated by standards such as EN 455 and EN 374, among others.

The researchers therefore initially see low-risk applications as possible areas of use, for example:

• Routine diagnostic examinations
• Ultrasound examinations
• Simple care or assistance tasks

In particularly sensitive areas such as operations or other invasive procedures, high requirements for barrier effectiveness and material stability continue to apply. Conventional gloves will continue to play a central role here in the future.

In addition to reducing plastic waste, the project addresses another aspect: the security of supply for disposable medical products.

A large proportion of personal protective equipment is now produced internationally and traded worldwide. In the future, bio-based materials could also be produced more regionally – for example, from locally available waste materials from the food industry. This would shorten transport routes and make supply chains more resilient.

However, whether biodegradable gloves actually find their way into everyday clinical practice still depends on several factors – including regulatory environments, production costs, and the scalability of manufacturing.

The idea of making disposable gloves from food waste shows how intensively researchers are currently searching for sustainable alternatives to disposable medical products.

Even though such solutions are still in their infancy, they could help reduce the environmental footprint of disposable products within healthcare in the long term – especially in areas with high consumption and comparatively low risk.

For clinics that want to make their procurement more sustainable, such approaches could represent an additional option in the future. After all, innovation often begins when an everyday product is reimagined.
