A Step Forward in Glaucoma Diagnosis: 'Smart' Contact Lens

Developed by a research team led by Dengbao Xiao, as reported in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, the new 'smart' contact lens features innovative technology to measure eye pressure accurately across various temperatures. This lens integrates two miniature spiral circuits embedded within polydimethylsiloxane, a standard contact lens material, capable of detecting minute pressure changes by analyzing natural vibration patterns.

The technology behind the lens allows it to transmit real-time data wirelessly, even in challenging conditions such as during eye movements or moisture exposure. This feature addresses one of the main limitations of previous devices where temperature fluctuations could lead to inaccurate readings.

Initial laboratory tests were conducted on pig eye specimens, allowing researchers to control ocular pressures and temperatures. These tests showed that using both circuits in the lens significantly improved the accuracy of the pressure readings, minimizing deviations caused by temperature changes.

The dual-circuit design of the 'smart' contact lens represents a significant advancement in the non-invasive monitoring of eye health, providing a reliable method for early glaucoma detection. This could lead to more timely and effective treatments, reducing the risk of vision loss for millions of patients.

The research received support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, highlighting the global effort toward innovating healthcare solutions.
