The University of Granada (UGR) has pioneered a solution for burn treatment with its artificial skin “UGRSKIN”.

Developed by the Tissue Engineering Research Group, this advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) has improved the approach to treating severe burns, offering patients new hope and enhanced outcomes.

UGRSKIN, unveiled in 2012, represents a significant leap forward in tissue engineering. It is based on human skin cells and natural biomaterials meticulously developed by the research group. After rigorous testing in laboratory animals, the UGR team obtained all necessary quality controls, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Following its approval by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS), UGRSKIN was first used in 2016 to treat a patient with severe burns covering 70 percent of their body. The successful outcome paved the way for further applications, with a total of 15 patients (8 adults and 4 children) treated to date, boasting an impressive overall survival rate of nearly 80 percent.

At a recent press conference, Prof. Miguel Alaminos highlighted the remarkable effectiveness of UGRSKIN. Upon implantation, the artificial skin seamlessly integrates with the patient's tissue, rapidly forming an epidermis akin to normal human skin. Over time, the dermis remodels itself, aligning with histological norms. Such outcomes underscore the transformative potential of UGRSKIN in burn care.

Treating severe burns remains a formidable healthcare challenge, with survival rates for extensive burns still alarmingly low. UGRSKIN represents a paradigm shift towards proactive, preventive medicine, offering a ray of hope for patients facing these traumatic injuries.

International success

The success of UGRSKIN has garnered international attention, with preliminary results presented at prestigious forums worldwide. The upcoming European Skin Tissue Engineering Network meeting in Granada further cements UGR's leadership in tissue engineering and burn treatment innovation.

UGRSKIN isn't just about survival—it's about restoring lives. Patients like Álvaro Trigo Puig, who received the artificial skin implant in 2018, attest to its transformative impact. Overcoming immense challenges post-treatment, Álvaro has embarked on remarkable feats, including scaling Mount Kilimanjaro and swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar.
