Medical wearables become more and more sophisticated. By now, they are not only able to record vital signs. With the Vital Connect Patch, MediBioSense is offering a wearable that can be used for real-time monitoring of patients.

In the interview with MEDICA-tradefair.com, MediBioSense CEO Simon Beniston is presenting his start-up and its product. He tells us what drives him and that sometimes you have to give up something to forge ahead.

Where does the idee for your product come from?

Simon Beniston: The ability to continuously monitor patient vital signs every second 24/7 has created a new paradigm in healthcare that did not exist before.

What problem do you want to address with it?

Beniston: The ability to monitor patients in real-time, know an issue before it happens, analyze real medical data and reduce the cost and demands on healthcare services, we believe, is a true game changer.

At which stage in your development are you now?

Beniston: We offer a CE/FDA medically certified Class IIa device. We have global clients in over 37 countries, including major pharma. We are still small but growing.

What was the biggest obstacle during the foundation of your company?

Beniston: Gaining adoption and understanding of how medical wearable technology can make a difference. We were ahead of the game.

What were you worried about most before founding the company?

Beniston: I am driven by success, but it is always good to have doubt to drive you forward.

What was your best decision until now?

Beniston: Giving up a well-paid global corporate position, to create a start-up with nothing.

How do you assess the opportunities for start-ups in the medical market in your country?

Beniston: In terms of innovation and support it is good. In terms of market entry into the UK healthcare, it is probably one of the most difficult in the world. The opportunities globally are the way forward.
