Silvano Zanuso, Scientific Communication & Research Manager at Technogym
Mr. Zanuso, with the initiative "Exercise is Medicine" you are campaigning for more physical activity to prevent disease. In the development of which diseases in particular does movement play a major role and why?
Silvano Zanuso: Physical inactivity is arguably one of the leading public health problems in the world. The huge burden of disease and death due to sedentary habits and low fitness are perhaps the leading public health problem in many countries. Physical activity and exercise are beneficial not only to maintain optimal health and to prevent chronic diseases but also in the treatment of various conditions. This is why we can say that ‘Exercise is Medicine’. Today, exercise is indicated in the treatment of a large number of medical disorders: hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, depression and many others.
Among the benefits, for example there is firm and consistent evidence that programs of increased physical activity and modest weight loss, reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes. In case of hypertension, both aerobic and progressive resistance exercise yield important reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, or again, in case of overweight those who report higher amounts or intensity of activity have approximately a 30 percent lower risk to fall in cardiovascular diseases, than less active persons. Last but not least, also in the worst scenario, evidence supports that the implementation of exercise prescription to cancer patients, brings with it reduced morbidity, improved function and quality of life, and potential for improved survival, with very low harmful risks.

At what points do you see a need for improvement in our healthcare system when it comes to taking physical activity seriously and using it for medical purposes?
There is a very significant European figure; the health budget in the European Union is split as the following: 97 percent is invested in treatment and only 3 percent of the budget in prevention. So that, there is a huge room for improvement. Investing in health prevention means being efficient in the long term because if we invest in culture, in education, in movement, in prevention there will be lots of advantages for all stakeholders.
Today, wellness has become a dominant trend all over the world and it represents a unique social opportunity for Governments to promote policies for health and preventions, for Companies to invest in corporate wellness programs and count on healthier and more productive employees and for companies.
With its "Exercise is Medicine" initiative, Technogym has been working for years to increase physical activity.
What are the goals of Exercise is Medicine?
