Donating blood - the World Blood Donation Day has been held annually since 2004 on 14th June, the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, discoverer of blood groups. The day is intended to make people all over the world aware of the relevance of blood donations and donors. But what significance does blood donation have for human health? What activities will take place on this day?
Many people are dependent on donated blood - whether after an accident or during surgery to compensate blood loss, organ and bone marrow transplants or diseases such as chronic anaemia. Blood donations are also needed to produce vaccines against tetanus infections.
According to indications of the German Red Cross (DRC) worldwide about 112,000 million blood donations are necessary every day. However, WHO indicates that only one percent of the population donates blood in 77 countries worldwide.

The World Blood Donation Day was initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Organization of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Society, the International Society for Transfusion Medicine and the International Federation of Blood Donation Organizations. The aim is to inform people worldwide about the enormous importance of blood donation for medical, scientific and pharmaceutical purposes. In addition, healthy people are encouraged to donate blood on this day as well as in future.
Under the slogan "Safe blood for all!", numerous actions, lectures and events will take place on 14th June 2019. The host country for World Blood Donor Day 2019 where the global event will take place is Rwanda. The WHO also starts a worldwide campaign. Digital materials, such as posters, desktop and mobile wallpaper as well as social cards are available for free download. Also promotional material, like mugs, caps, t-shirts, pens and pins as well as banners and stickers, can be delivered after mail request.
