We are delighted to share some exciting and long-awaited news within the Medical Equipment community: the SDC protocol (Service Device Communication) is finally being deployed.
After years of development, the ISO/IEEE 11073 standard has reached implementation as SDC — a universal “language” that enables medical devices to seamlessly exchange information about patient status through simple plug & trust connectivity.
Major companies have already adopted the standard and recently showcased it at the ESA 2025 Congress. This breakthrough will be a true game changer for the medical equipment industry, revolutionizing workflows in operating rooms, recovery wards, intensive care units, and even telemedicine applications.
What is SDC?
SDC is an interoperability protocol based on ISO 11073, designed as a common language among devices to ensure reliable communication and data exchange. It will unlock a new range of opportunities, improving usability and performance, ultimately enhancing patient safety. Connectivity issues will soon be a thing of the past.
Imagine the possibilities:
Upcoming devices such as our Vision DUO neuromuscular transmission (NMT) monitor will not only report a patient’s status in real time but also exchange data simultaneously with all other connected devices at the bedside.
Here are just a few examples of what SDC makes possible:
We are confident this is the right step toward better connectivity, safer care, and smarter service.
If you would like more details, we can provide the video of a presentation recently delivered at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM).
