Nasal vaccines under the microscope

Hello,

What if a spray in the nose could slow down the next pandemic? Nasal vaccines can trigger mucosal immunity. This is intended to curb virus replication in the respiratory tract and thus transmission via aerosols. Or they can serve as a booster for intramuscular vaccines.

Prof. Honglin Chen from the University of Hong Kong is working on the development of a nasal vaccine platform for the H5N1 avian flu virus. In our interview, you can find out what opportunities this platform opens up for global pandemic preparedness.

Monitoring heartbeat from a distance

In Cottbus, a sensor system is being developed that measures the heartbeat through clothing, blankets and mattresses and without any physical contact to the patients. This radar technology could greatly simplify diagnostics, especially for patient groups such as burn patients, for whom conventional electrodes are unsuitable.

New era of drug testing

A beating organoid with an integrated immune system: researchers from Hanover are developing a human heart model that not only beats realistically, but can also simulate immune reactions. This opens up a new dimension for safe drug development, even before the first clinical test begins.

Game changer for pandemic prevention?

What if we could stop virus transmission where it starts – in the nose and throat? Nasal vaccines are a smart way to fight respiratory infections and could become globally relevant. Prof. Honglin Chen explains in our interview how nasal vaccines could strengthen the immune defense at the mucous membrane and contain pandemics at an early stage.
