Siemens Medical Solutions recently installed the first Somatom Emotion 16 computed tomography (CT) systems. First clinical images have shown the high potential of the new 16-slice-CT, which offers best performance at an attractive investment level.
The first systems were installed in Germany at Israelitische Krankenhaus, Hamburg, and Klinikum Nuremberg Nord, in Belgium at Cliniques du Sud-Luxembourg/St. Joseph, Arlon, and in the US at Ohio State University, Columbus. First customers like Johann-C. Steffens, M.D., of the Israelitische Krankenhaus, agree that the Somatom Emotion 16 unites high capabilities and cost efficiency: “It’s a great new development to combine high-end clinical capabilities and cost effectiveness in a CT scanner intended for routine clinical use. The Somatom Emotion 16 gives me the flexibility I need to perform routine examinations with high quality results that allow me to make a fast and accurate diagnosis.” Among other indications, he utilizes the new system for CT-based early detection of colon cancer (virtual colonoscopy) and lung cancer, and examinations of peripheral arteries (angiographies). With the new system, he has been able to reduce radiation dose up to 60 percent. “It’s amazing how dose-efficient the new Somatom Emotion 16 is! For a high-quality lung scan, we use only one-third the effective patient dose compared to our previous CT system.”
“The Somatom Emotion 16 provides me with an excellent combination of advanced clinical performance and low life-cycle costs,” says Reinhard Loose, PhD, MD, head of the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at Klinikum Nuremberg Nord. In the 1.400-bed clinic, the Somatom Emotion 16 is utilized for routine examinations of the brain, abdominal organs and the skeleton, as well as emergency examinations. For these, a fast and reliable diagnosis is extremely important. Says Loose: “The Somatom Emotion 16 is a fantastic new system which meets our needs in terms of clinical applications and workflow optimization.”
The Somatom Emotion 16 and all its components require only 18.5 square meter (200 square feet) installation space because, as an air cooled system, it does not need an external cooling device outside the gantry. In addition to the economical purchase price, this minimal space requirement and the overall low life cycle costs also contribute to the system’s cost efficiency. From a clinical perspective, the new scanner offers every advantage of a modern 16-slice system: image acquisition without movement artifacts due to short breath hold times, high diagnostic image quality thanks to a collimation of down to 0.6 millimeters, a maximum gantry rotation speed of 0.5 seconds, and a comprehensive set of clinical applications. With a reconstruction speed of up to 16 images per second, and the automatic reconstruction of axial, sagittal, coronal, and double-oblique images, the Somatom Emotion 16 enables a fast diagnosis.
