BARRIE, Ontario, September 15, 2015 –Canadian Healthcare product developer and manufacturer, Southmedic Inc. returns to MEDICA, the world’s largest annual medical trade fair, November 16-19 in Düsseldorf, Germany where it will feature its unique OxyMask™ as well as its new Dynamic Tissue Systems™ product lines at the show.
OxyMask is the world’s first “open” oxygen delivery system and using an innovative Pin-Diffuser System to direct a focused flow of oxygen directly to the patient’s nose and mouth, eliminating the need for a closed mask. OxyMask’s open concept design eliminates the claustrophobic feeling patients traditionally experience when wearing an oxygen mask and allows them to communicate verbally and be clearly understood while under treatment. This provides the patient with a comfortable user experience that boosts treatment compliance. At the same time, OxyMask is safer; it reduces the risk of carbon dioxide (CO2) rebreathing. It also eliminates the hospital’s need to keep multiple types of oxygen masks on hand.
“Safe oxygen delivery to patients is becoming the focus for clinicians around the world. Our ‘Oxy’ technology was clearly ahead of its time when first introduced but now clinicians are seeing how it will optimize their oxygen delivery practice” says David Whiteside, Vice President of Respiratory Sales and Marketing at Southmedic. “Also hospital-wide OxyMask adoptions at facilities like Duke University Hospital in the United States and Oshawa General Hospital in Canada are proof that clinicians consider safe oxygen delivery as vital to the overall safety of their patients.”
Nowhere is that increased safety more evident, adds Whiteside, than in the labor and delivery room: “The older closed mask technology can cause the new Mom to become claustrophobic, causing her to rip the mask off, affecting her breathing and the amount of oxygen she and her baby receive. But with the OxyMask, she can both breathe and communicate comfortably; so she may well forget she even has an oxygen mask on.”
Other company lines that reflect Southmedic’s strong concern for built-in safety include the company’s Capnography or ETCOs products, which enable clinicians to sample potentially dangerous CO2 levels while delivering oxygen.
Southmedic’s wound closure product - Dynamic Tissue Systems (DTS), makes life safer and healthier for patients after invasive surgical procedures. DTS uses “dynamic traction” to draw the wound edges back together, reducing the risk of infection and speed healing, while reducing hospital length of stay.
Indeed, even Southmedic’s internationally known surgical blades and handles have been safety engineered. Southmedic’s innovative CABO (Cutting Above and Beyond Objection) is a unique safety-first scalpel cartridge that will fit into virtually any scalpel handle the surgeon prefers.
