Patientenidentification with SATO

SATO the world’s leading manufacturer of label and barcode printers and specialist in Data Collection Systems (DCS) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) presents its comprehensive labeling program for the health care market at the MEDICA in Düsseldorf (hall 15/D37) from 14th – 17th November 2007. The centre element of SATO’s healthcare solutions is patient wristbands which minimize risk and increase efficiency and safety within hospitals in areas such as medication management, blood traceability and others. The range, which consists consists of over 30 different styles, sizes and colours features different materials for different situations, from ultra soft for new borns, infants and the elderly through to comfortable and durable adult wristbands for general use. All wristbands are manufactured from a high performance synthetic anti allergenic material and permit the addition of variable data from SATO printers in both eye readable, linear or 2D bar code format. The comprehensive product range includes RFID enabled wristbands. The combination of SATO positive Patient Identification and a portable data capture unit (PDT, PDA etc…) enable hospital staff to ensure that patient care and medication is matched accurately to the right patient. In addition, patient data, photograph etc. can be recalled via the data capture unit by scanning the patient wristband. SATO positive patient identification reduces the potential for error and reduces mistakes.

The combination of SATO patient wrist bands and the Unit-Dose-System contributes to particularly high performance and cost reduction in the medication process. The physician in charge enters the order directly into the system. At the hospital pharmacy the prescribed dose will be put together automatically and checked for potential contraindications and interdependencies with other pharmaceuticals. Then the pharmaceuticals will be labeled clearly and assigned to the patient. With every medication, the nursing staff scans the barcode on the pharmaceutical packing and at the wristband to make sure that every patient gets the right dose at the right time. SATO’s various patient identification solutions are already working very successfully in many hospitals worldwide.

Together with a partner company SATO offers also a tracking solution for the health care sector, which can be used to locate patients or for asset tracking based on WLAN. Broadcasting boxes, like a small matchbox, enable the hospital to locate the valuable medical machines accurately to three meters. If necessary, the WLAN tracking solution can give an alarm signal, e.g. if medical machines or a dementia patient leave a determined place.
