About DGIM e.V.

Today, with over 23,500 members, the German Society for Internal Medicine (DGIM) is the largest medicalscientific specialist association in Germany and in Europe. Since its foundation in Wiesbaden in 1882, it has united all scientists and doctors active in the internal medicine field under its roof.

As a non-profit association, the DGIM promotes knowledge and research within the entire fi eld of internal medicine.
It sees it as its duty to communicate academic findings to those engaged in applied medicine. Since its foundation, the DGIM has strived towards unity within internal medicine. It simultaneously focuses on the internistic subspecialties. On this basis, it fosters active exchange and communication with core scientific specialities such as angiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, haematology/oncology, cardiology, nephrology, pneumology and rheumatology. Further special internistic areas of focus for the DGIM include geriatrics, internistic intensive care and emergency medicine, and infectiology. DGIM membership has more than doubled in the last ten years.

Amongst its members today are not just the tenured professors of internal medicine. Established internists and general practitioners, doctors in advanced and further training, and young medics all find a good partner in the specialist association.

The DGIM considers it its central task to advance knowledge and research within the entire fi eld of internal medicine – for the benefit of the patients. In this sense, it also supports the transfer of current research findings to daily care in hospitals and private practice. The annual DGIM Convention of Internists in Wiesbaden offers a distinguished platform for discussing and exchanging the latest scientific findings in internal medicine as a whole. From 2014, the DGIM will bring this expertise to the MEDICA EDUCATION CONFERENCE, for the contextual implementation of which it assumes immediate responsibility. As one of the largest medical specialist associations in Europe, it will manage the educational programme of the conference, which takes place each year during the World Forum for Medicine, MEDICA.

In addition to communication with doctors and scientists, the DGIM also focuses on regular exchanges with the research industry. In this context, for example, the specialist association discusses scientific and health care policy issues with firms from the pharmaceutical industry and medical equipment manufacturers, as well as scientific publishers. Through its active media and public relations strategy, it maintains a constant dialogue with its members, media representatives, unions, political figures and the wider public.
