Paraplegia: Help with potential

Dear Sir or Madam,

Today’s medicine cannot simply undo paraplegia. At best, patients can be mobilized again using aids like wheelchairs and exoskeletons. A new research project wants to help them to move again without the need for external prosthesis. Learn in our current interview what role electrodes, brain potential and muscle control play here.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer that can take a very different course with different patients. That’s why it is very difficult for physicians to predict the course of this disease. Researchers at the Center for Integrated Oncology in Cologne, Germany, have now developed a tool to help physicians with this task.

It happens about 1,800 times per year: after a sporting or traffic-related accident, a person's spinal cord is injured to where nerve tracts are severed and he becomes paralyzed. Researchers now want to develop software that measures the brain signals of paralyzed patients and sends out electrical impulses via a system to stimulate muscles, causing them to move again.
