Towards a heart valve that grows

Adults often say about children "They grow up so fast". Parents merely need to buy new clothes then. But medical technology has no "one size fits for all" for the young and youngest patients: They require medical products that fit to their individual body size. This is especially difficult with implants that need to be replaced again and again because they do not grow together with the patient. Learn at how artificial heart valves are supposed to do exactly this and spare children many surgeries in the process.

Heart valve for children that grows

Photo: Heart valve; Copyright: Fraunhofer IGB
There are various artificial heart valves available for children, but they have one essential drawback: they need to be replaced because the children are still growing. The artificial valve, on the other hand, remains the same size - and subsequently becomes too small. This is why an artificial heart valve that grows over time would be ideal because it would prevent the children from needing repeated surgeries.
